Of particular interest are a group of eight genera endemic to the island of Madagascar, the Nesomyinae, whose morphologies are so diverse that each has been separated into its own subfamily in some classifications.
These are the Calomyscinae, an African clade (Nesomyinae, Petromyscinae, Dendromurinae, Cricetomyinae), a "cricetid group" (Cricetinae, Arvicolinae, Sigmodontinae, Neotominae, Tylomyinae), and a "murid group" (Murinae, Deomyinae, Gerbillinae).
The Nesomyidae ("African mice") are defined as the most recent common ancestor of the Nesomyinae, Dendromurinae, Petromyscinae, and Mystromyinae and all of its descendants.
