Petropavlovsk was a great source of fish (particularly salmon) and crab meat for the USSR in the 20th century; however since the end of the Soviet era fishing rights have been granted to foreign interests.
The city is situated on high hills and surrounded by volcanoes.

The Monument of Glory was erected in 1882 in memory of the heroic defense of Petropavlovsk.
In 1954, the year of the 100th anniversary of the heroic defense of Petropavlovsk, a new monument was opened - the monument to the legendary 3rd Battery under command of lieutenant A.Maksutov.
This battery defended the inner harbour of Petropavlovsk and repelled the main attack of the English-French squadron.

The small fort of Petropavlovsk was founded in 1752, and was the military centre of the Ishim line of fortifications.
PET ROrAVLOVSK is also the name of a Russian seaport in Ramchatka, on the eastern shore uf the Bay of Avacha, in 53 N. and 158 44 E. Its harbour, one of the best on the Pacific, is little used, and tile town consists merely of a few huts with some 400 inhabitants.
Its naval institutions were transferred to Nikolayevsk after the attack of the Anglo French fleet in 1854.

Charlie was supposed to arrive, flying down in his ultralite from Petropavlovsk on June 12th at about 4:00PM.
I drank a shot of brandy and fell asleep, praying he was OK. He had an engine problem just before leaving; the fixing of which only he can describe.
