Petrozavodsk (Russian: Петрозаво́дск; Karelian/Finnish: Petroskoi) is the capital of the Republic of Karelia, Russia, with a population of 266,160 (2002 Census).
Petrozavodsk was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and has had town status since 1777.
The name in Finnish is usually Petroskoi, but during the Finnish occupation of East Karelia (in the Continuation War 1941–1944), the town was renamed Äänislinna.

Many of Petrozavodsk small officials (their number in XIX century has considerably increased) receiving the scanty salaries were engaged the diversified works to support their families: preparation of brooms and haymaking, gathering of fire wood scattered by storms on the coast, and, certainly, fishery.
