Petrus Christus. Biography - Olga's Gallery
Petrus Christus, together with his elder contemporary Rogier van der Weyden, was the successor of the founders of the old Netherlandish school of painting: the van Eyck brothers and Campin.
After Christus was made master and citizen of Bruges in 1444, van Eyck’s influence on him faded and was replaced by his interest in van der Weyden and Campin.
Since 1462 Petrus Christus and his wife were the members of the Brotherhood of Madonna of the Dry Tree, a religious society, which was engaged in charity and worshiped the immaculate conception of the Virgin.

Haber's Art Reviews: Petrus Christus at the Met
That meant that Petrus, from a village by the name of Baerle, had to go through some formalities to manage a profitable workshop.
Petrus had little interest in hidden religious symbols, yet another tribute to his modernity.
And yet it must take on Petrus, who in a sense gave up on his teacher's symbolic meanings, with a reticence that reminds me of Vermeer, inarticulate before the fate of his women.

 Joel Upton: Petrus Christus
Long hidden in the shadows of Jan van Eyck and Roger van der Weyden, Petrus Christus was one of the crucial painters active in the complex development of Flemish painting during a period of remarkable vitality and attainment.
Upton contends that Christus's art marks an important stage in the evolution of values from the objective or moral collectivism of the thirteenth century to a more subjective, intensely personal, moral individualism of the latter part of the fifteenth century.
Petrus Christus is more than a study of a single painter.

Christus was successful in the rendering of geometric perspective and became noted for his fine, introspective treatment of figures, particularly in portraiture.
Many of his works show a simplification of the compositions of Jan van Eyck, and there are traces of the influence of Roger van der Weyden.
Among the paintings ascribed to Christus are the portraits of Edward Grymestone (Earl of Verulam Coll., England); Lamentation and a portrait of an unknown Carthusian monk (both: Metropolitan Mus.); Lamentation (Brussels); and Nativity (National Gall.

Petrus Christus - Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Petrus Christus is first mentioned in the record of those purchasing Bruges citizenship, which he acquired on 6 July 1444.
He was described in the record of this transaction as a native of Baerle, which probably meant the town of Baerle-Duc on the present Belgian-Dutch border.
Since the 1986 publication of the systematic catalogue, Maximiliaan Martens discovered in the accounts of the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Snow in Bruges that the painter's wife paid his dues for the administrative year 1475/1476 and that the confraternity paid for a portion of the cost of a funeral mass for Petrus Christus.

 The Lamentation by CHRISTUS, Petrus
The Lamentation is one of the few large-scale works ascribed to Petrus Christus.
The large and unusual format, the use of expensive paints and the time-consuming painting techniques all indicate that the panel was not intended for the free market.
In any event, Petrus Christus appears to have copied this figure in every respect from a Descent from the Cross by the Master of Flémalle, which once hung in the Sint-Jakobskerk in Bruges, and which is known from a free copy kept in Liverpool.

Bruges, Belgium - What stands out in the wood panels of the Flemish Primitives is the immaculate precision of detail and the translucence of light that has survived the centuries.
Examination of an enlarged detail of Petrus Christus' "The Birth of Christ" reveals the excessive handiwork of restorers.
Without the help of science, it would be impossible to see the difference between the restorer's touch and the historic master Petrus Christus in the two other paintings in the show.
