  ConsumerReports.org - Pets & vets 7/03
Even if your pet is perfectly healthy, vets are now ready with a battery of tests, shots, and even X-rays for the annual wellness checkup, costing up to $140 for kittens and puppies and as much as $340 for geriatric cats and dogs.
Vet charges can also be influenced by how much in college loans a newly minted vet has to pay off, how new or fancy the vet's office is, and whether the office, which vets often call an animal hospital, is located in a high-rent part of town.
Some vets are steering consumers to expensive new surgeries, such as the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy, or TPLO, a procedure in which an orthopedic specialist saws apart a dog's tibia and screws it back together at a new angle to reduce pressure on the knee.

The research for pet insurer More Than found almost 80% of vets are seeing increasing numbers of obese pets, yet 90% of owners believe their pets are not overweight.

Defra, UK - Animal health and welfare - Pet Travel Scheme - Procedures for Vets - Certificates for pets entering the UK ...
Pet owners can still use PETS certificates to enter or re-enter the UK, and other EU countries, until the “Valid until” date shown on the certificate.
However, to enter or re-enter the UK the pet must have had a satisfactory blood test, which can be arranged in the UK or in any other listed country.
Pet owners wishing to enter the UK with their pet should therefore be encouraged to delay getting the certificate until a month or two before they travel to ensure that it will still be valid when they enter the UK.

The interest in holistic pet care has even prompted a few veterinary schools to add short courses on acupuncture, homeopathy and other unconventional therapies.
Even traditional vets acknowledge that some forms of alternative therapy may be beneficial, according to veterinarian Richard C. Apparently, vets are ripping their clients off and putting pets at risk by vaccinating pets every year as recommended by the vaccine manufacturers.
In the letter, the authors state that in their opinion vets are over-vaccinating patients, compromising existing immunity or damaging pet health by producing allergic reactions.
By the time the national press and radio "broke" the story, it was being reported as though a significant number of vets had finally broken ranks, confessing that the veterinary profession was ripping off pet owners with unnecessary vaccinations that might well be killing their pets rather than protecting them.
