Petts Wood is widely regarded as one of the most successful of the new inter-war London suburbs and has been celebrated as such in print and on television.
Like Petts Wood it was an attempt to create a new community in which the housing would retain a rural flavour.
In Petts Wood itself after 1945 there was little new housing, for the estates on both sides of the railway had been virtually completed before the war and left few gaps.

Petts Wood also has a second pub (The Sovereign of the Seas) and a railway station.
Most of Petts Wood was built in the early twentieth century by the developer Basil Scruby, as a high quality estate in a rural setting only a short train journey from the city, with the East side being built first.

 William Willett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He lived most of his life in Chislehurst, Kent, where, it is said, after riding his horse in Petts Wood near his home early one summer morning and noticing how many blinds were still down, the idea for Daylight Saving Time first occurred to him.
He suggested that the clocks should be advanced by 20 minutes at a time at 2 am on successive Sundays in April and be retarded by the same amount on Sundays in September.
He is commemorated in Petts Wood by a memorial sundial, set permanently to Daylight Saving Time.

I grew up in a suburb of London called Petts Wood which is near Bromley where I was born.
One of Petts Wood's claims to fame is that it was the home of one William Willett who was the promoter of Summer Time.
When the housing part of Petts Wood was built in 1929 part of the wood was preserved and in the wood is a memorial to Willett which has on it a sundial with this line on it.

What really concerns me is the Eurostar train also passes frequently along this line, and although the speed of this train is supposed to be restricted, this is a fallacy.
I am a member of the Royal British Legion branch at Petts Wood, which has a small car park to the rear of the premises, backing on to the railway.
This Channel Tunnel train quite often speeds through Petts Wood Station at this point so much, that on one occasion the air compression just as I was vacating my car tore the door our of my hand and blew paper and other debris around the car park like a hurricane.

A COMMUTER caught in a train blaze has called for fire extinguishers to be installed in carriages and on platforms.
Carl Burgess, 35, of Derwent Drive, Petts Wood, was travelling home on the 6.16pm train from Cannon Street when a man standing at Chislehurst station shouted: "Your train's on fire."
The train continued to Petts Wood station, while worried passengers, who could see thick smoke billowing up outside the windows, made their way to the opposite end of the carriage.
