Evergreen Petula Clark has no plans to retire and bearing in mind her records used to outsell Piaf’s in France, a return date at a famous Paris venue in September 2003 was quite a nostalgic event.
PETULA CLARK-LIVE AT THE PARIS OLYMPIA (Silva Screen SILCD 1169) records her in stunning form performing an equal mix of songs in English and French, with the latter contained mainly in two well received medleys of her Gallic hits.
Clark's voice is as strong and rich as it was forty years ago, when "Downtown" first hit pop charts worldwide - her enunciation is so perfect you can hear her dot her "i"s and cross her "t"s, and she not only hits all the high notes, but holds them for several measures as well.

Sure, it's a stretch, and a good one at that, but where it brought significance to Springfield's catalog, the sound is merely a pleasant and somewhat welcome addition to Clark's work -- many of her Tony Hatch hits had mega-orchestration anyway.
