In the time of Edward the Confessor Petworth was an allodial manor held by his queen Edith, and in 1086 Robert Fitz-Tetbald held it of Roger Montgomery, earl of Shrewsbury.
Through Queen Adelisa, Petworth came first into the hands of her steward, Reginald de Wyndsor, and was afterwards given to her brother Josceline, who held it of the honour of Arundel.
The only daughter of the last earl married Charles, duke of Somerset, in 1682, and Petworth descended through their daughter Catherine to the earls of Egremont.

 Petworth Deer Park
Petworth House is not in the centre of its park but at the southern end of it, practically in the town itself.
The pictures Turner painted are in Petworth House together with the carvings of Grinling Gibbons, commissioned by the Duke of Somerset who built the house between 1688 and 1696.
There are also portraits by Van Dyke of the Percys of Petworth including one of the Wizard Earl who had an interest in alchemy and was imprisoned in the Tower for 16 years for his suspected part in the Gunpowder Plot.

Petworth is a small town and civil parish in the Chichester District of West Sussex, England.
It is located at the junction of the A272 east-west road from Heathfield to Winchester, which is itself the subject of a book by the Dutch author Pieter Boogaart, and the A283 Milford to Shoreham-by-Sea road.
Petworth Fair is an annual event, held on 20th November in the market square.

The Petworth immigrants were primarily poor agricultural labourers and their families who received both private and public assistance to migrate.
The central character in the story was Thomas Sockett, rector of Petworth, personal chaplain to Egremont and founder of the Petworth Emigration Committee.
However, immigration topics are a part of most high school Canadian Studies courses, and the Petworth Project can be used by teachers to illustrate how immigrants are affected by events in both their country of origin and their new homeland.

Petworth is twinned with San Quirico a small walled village in the province of Tuscany in Italy and with Ranville a small town just across the channel near Caen in Normandy.
