Petworth House in Petworth, West Sussex, United Kingdom, is a late 17th-century mansion, rebuilt in 1688 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, and altered in the 1870s by Anthony Salvin.
Today's building houses an important collection of paintings and sculptures, including 19 oil paintings by Turner, who was a regular visitor to Petworth, paintings by Van Dyck, carvings by Grinling Gibbons and murals by Louis Laguerre.

For some time the painter Turner lived at his Sussex residence, Petworth House, and in addition to Turner, the painter Leslie, the sculptor Flaxman and other talented artists received commissions from Egremont, who filled his house with valuable works of art.
The earl died unmarried on the 11th of November 1837, and on the death of his nephew and successor, George Francis Wyndham, the 4th earl (1785-1845), the earldom of Egremont became extinct.
Petworth, however, and the large estates had already passed to George Wyndham (1787-1869), a natural son of the 3rd earl, who was created Baron Leconfield in 1859.

In the early 19th century Turner was one of the artists given the run of the house by the third Earl of Egremont, whose passion was for art.
Although the house still holds many Turner masterpieces commissioned by the earl, the sketches were for Turner's amusement.
One picture, also back on loan to the house, is said to show the time of his death, with the earl's open coffin in the drawing room where an armorial coronet is overthrown on the floor.

Restoration work elsewhere in Petworth House has revealed an external mullioned window dating from around the same time as the chapel, now visible in situ on the oak staircase; and the National Trust have opened the enclosed 'Chapel Court' to show the outer wall of the medieval manor.
This is reinforced by the towered building depicted on a 1610 map of Petworth (though the 8th Earl of Northumberland had made major additions to the medieval house by this time).

Turner made more than 100 sketches of the country house and its surrounding landscape during the 1820s when he often stayed as a guest of his patron, the third Earl of Egremont.
The Turner at Petworth exhibition includes more than 70 watercolours, oil paintings and small sketches which are rarely seen in public because they are so fragile.
One of the other highlights for visitors to the house are four landscapes commissioned by the earl, placed in the exact spots in the Carved Room where they were meant to be hung.
