Finely crystalline petzite with well defined cubic cleavage has been mistaken for galena in the Bay vein, but may be distinguished by its lighter colour, finer grain, and common association with free gold.

One of the most widespread gold tellurides is petzite, a mineral significantly underrepresented in most collections.
Petzite is almost unknown in the eastern and central United States, despite the fact that telluride minerals have been identified from a number of the southern Piedmont's many gold deposits.
It has been reported from the Bend deposit, near Gilman, Taylor County, Wisconsin, where it occurs as a steel-gray granular mineral associated with other gold, silver, and telluriumminerals; and it has also been identified as a very minor constituent of the Flambeau mine ores, Ladysmith, Rusk County, Wisconsin.

Sue investigated petrologically (using SEM technology, fluid inclusion and x-ray diffractometry equipment and thermodynamic calculations) the gold-telluride mineralization associated with the caldera.
About 95% of the gold is present as gold tellurides (petzite and kostovite) while native tellurium is the dominant tellurium phase while tellurides of Ag, Bi and Cu are also dominant at Wild Dog.

In the article on petzite (January/ February 2004), two Canadian localities were cited that, in fact, are one and the same: "Home mine at Noranda" and the "Noranda mine at Rouyn." It is a bit of a convoluted story.
The mine in question was first called the Noranda mine and later renamed the Home mine in honor of the prospector who discovered the deposit, Ed Horne.

Hessite and petzite are silver and gold-silver telluride minerals, respectively, that are usually associated with high-grade gold deposits near alkaline-igneous bodies.
There are no igneous bodies mapped in the area, but a two-hole drilling program completed by NJMC in 2003 revealed abundant alteration including carbonate enrichment, postassic alteration, and a halo of specular hematite and pyrite with occasional galena.

Previous studies have argued that Sb is essential to montbrayite because without Sb, montbrayite is metastable and will break down to calaverite and native gold.
Montbrayite, up to 0.18 mm in length, coexists with altaite (PbTe) and petzite, native gold and petzite, and calaverite and native gold, and is intergrown with chalcopyrite, sphalerite, altaite, and pyrite in Fimiston-style mineralization in the Golden Mile.
Electron microprobe compositions of montbrayite obtained herein from the Golden Mile reveal that it contains up to 7.46 wt.
