Acacia peuce, or waddywood is one of the rarest and most striking trees of the Australian arid zone.
The ecology of Acacia peuce is the subject of an ongoing study.
The Acacia peuce thrives, growing to heights of 17 metres and it is estimated it can live for up to 500 years.

I first saw a slide of Acacia peuce about 10 years ago and wondered whether I would ever visit the reserve at Andado Station, on the edge of the Simpson Desert, where the photograph was taken.
The second place where I saw Acacia peuce was just east of North Bore and north of Hubbard Hill on Andado Station, about 50km north of Old Andado Station, a spot passed by Madigan on his 1939 expedition across the Simpson Desert.
It is a long way to travel from the capital cities to the home territory of A. peuce, but botanically it is a fascinating journey, whether seeing the seas of wildflowers after rain, or perhaps a more exciting case - finding one small unknown flower in a rocky cranny in time of drought.

Unasylva - No. 84 - Acacia peuce: a tree for arid areas
There are few woody plants which reach tree size under climatic conditions such as those in which this occurs and it is by far the tallest in the locality.
Since Acacia peuce has not been planted and subjected to trials under plantation conditions, there is no way of knowing whether it will fulfill a useful place as a plantation tree in arid areas on a world basis.
Its extraordinary performance, however, in the soils and conditions under which it occurs naturally make preliminary trials from the precious small amount of seed obtained well worth the effort.

The Mac Clark (Acacia peuce) Conservation Reserve is significant as it contains one of only three known populations of the nationally vulnerable species Acacia peuce.
The population occurs as a disjunct stand on the western edge of the Simpson Desert, separated by 300km of dunefields from the two other populations near Boulia and Birdsville on the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert.
The reserve is a significant reserach site for establishing further information regarding the ecology of Acacia peuce, its use by Aboriginal people and the occupation of the Simpson Desert region by Aboriginal people prior to European development of the area for pastoral grazing.

The Balkan species Pinus peuce (a Tertiary relict) occupies over 20% of its area; the reserve is the only place where this species is found in the Stara Planina and is its most northern habitat in Europe.
Study of Pinus peuce would be of international interest, since this woody species, though a Tertiary relict, displays exceptional aggressiveness in re-invading unwooded terrain, gradually re-establishing its former upper distribution limits.

The relationship between the anchorage mechanics and root architecture of Pinus peuce was investigated by carrying out winching tests and examining excavated root systems of 20 mature trees.
The root system was dominated by 6.1±1.3 lateral roots, more than 70% of the lateral root cross sectional area (CSA) being distributed in the uppermost 10 cm of soil.
These results are compared with those for the related P. sylvestris and suggest that the assimilation and anchorage characteristics of root systems are controlled independently of each other.
