Armand Peugeot (educated at the Ecole Centrale Paris) introduced the Peugeot "Le Grand Bi" penny-farthing in 1882 and a range of bicycles thereafter.
Peugeot names the models of their cars in the x0y format; x describes the size of the car (and hence its class), whereas y describes the model number (the higher the number, the newer the model).

My own experience of the 607 adds fuel to the Peugeot flagship's pyre: I borrowed one when it was launched and it promptly broke down in, of all places, Aston Martin's HQ in Newport Pagnell.
Production lasted 15 years until the 404 was finally superseded by the equally tough, but more advanced 504 which, though it disappeared from Europe over 20 years ago, is still on sale in some parts of North Africa today.

I am presently building a 404 motor with 1800 crank and standard head in an attempt to build on this aspect, the 1800 is just not as responsive, probably due to the bigger valves.Let you know how it goes in a couple of weeks.
I have since driven a 8.35:1 404 (67 model) and it went heaps better than mine, but still not as well as the 1.8 or the 2 litre, but the 1600 is definitely sweeter (due to its short stroke).
This is the word from the Club 404 in France too, so it's not just me. I know the 504 TI pumps with the pneumatic device are more finicky, but the KF2 unit is dead simple and reliable.

His project was to restore his 1969 white 404 station wagon,after removing some rust problems,but was unable to complete the task due to ill health after working on it for numerous years.
Replaced by a 70 404 wagon that didn't last as long, Then a very long run with a 73 BMW 2002 that outlasted all of the aforementioned and then some, then a long run with a 505 sedan.

Peugeot 404 is vehicle that I was buy in very bad condition by the free adds paper, but in the relation with condition, he was maybe little bit expensive.
Apart from he was in parts he was damage throw left side, and that was bothering me little bit because I'm not a plumber and in mechanism I have understanding in amateur level.
Alas I don't have fotodokumentation from the beginning of restoration, but first shoot describe my Peugeot after some time that I worked on him (not in running condition, but on heap) just to see where can I start to work.
