		Peyton Place jumped the shark in the episode in which Allison Mackenzie (Mia Farrow) discovers the identity of her father, Elliott Carson (Tim O'Connor).

		It seems to be merely a glossy soap opera, with hidden passions and family secrets and Lana Turner's bosom heaving on the poster, but the glossiness is the key to why it works so well.
		This is a movie which deals with some pretty tough subjects, which were presented in all of their sleazy glory in the novel but which have been tastefully toned down for the film, and as a result they are all the more effective.
		The movie opens with beautiful panoramic shots of the small New England town, a place where, we are told, "time is not measured by the clock or the calendar, but by the seasons." That line is spoken by Allison MacKenzie (Diane Varsi), who narrates the film.

		This is an interesting sequel from the point of view that none of the cast from Peyton Place reprise their roles and the time period seems to have been moved up 10 or 15 years without the principal characters aging.
		The story is standard soap opera material, yet it does not fail to entertain thanks to fine performances from a menacing Mary Astor, a charming and gracious Jeff Chandler and a noble Robert Sterling.
		However, the film benefits from beautiful color photography and Franz Waxman's reworking of his original Peyton Place score, which is in stereo on this VHS copy.
