Soap Opera - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Soap operas, in their present format, were introduced to television in 1949.
The term "soap opera" originated from the fact that when these serial dramas were aired on daytime radio, the commercials aired during the shows were largely aimed at housewives.
Soaps aired during the golden age of radio usually used organ s to produce most of their music (because they were cheaper than full-blown orchestra s).

Soap Opera   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Soap operas are of two basic narrative types: "open" soap operas, in which there is no end point toward which the action of the narrative moves; and "closed" soap operas, in which, no matter how attenuated the process, the narrative does eventually close.
Thus the soap opera has been the most easily parodied of all broadcasting genres, and its presumed audience most easily stereotyped as the working-class "housewife" who allows the dishes to pile up and the children to run amuck because of her "addiction" to soap operas.
Despite the fact that the soap opera is demonstrably one of the most narratively complex genres of television drama whose enjoyment requires considerable knowledge by its viewers, and despite the fact that its appeals for half a century have cut across social and demographic categories, the term continues to carry this sexist and classist baggage.

The program was based on the best-selling novel Peyton Place (1956) written by Grace Metalious, the wife of a school teacher who lived in the quiet little town of Gilmanton, New Hampshire.
Metalious claimed that her book was a work of fiction and that none of the characters were based on the good people of her hometown, but that didn't keep her husband from being fired from his teaching position.
The town of Peyton Place worked its way further into American popular culture when the phrase "This is just another Peyton Place" appeared in the lyrics of the Number One hit song "Harper Valley, PTA" (1968) sung by Jeannie C. Riley.

Peyton Place, based on Grace Metalious's sensational, scandalous (for its time), best-selling and immensely popular novel was filmed in 1957, with Lana Turner, Hope Lange, Russ Tamblyn, Arthur Kennedy and Diane Varsi in the central role of Alison MacKenkie.
The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards (although, incredibly, Franz Waxman's score was not, and, in the event, all nine nominations were unsuccessful.) Peyton Place went on to spawn three cinematic sequels and a 514 episode, thrice-weekly, prime time ABC network television series starring Ryan O'Neal and Mia Farrow.
During the recording sessions for Peyton Place, the film's producer, Jerry Wald wrote:- " Every musician on the lot is highly enthusiastic about Franz Waxman's score for PEYTON PLACE, from Alfred Newman on down to the members of the orchestra who recognize the score as a masterful job and a great achievement in scoring.

Peyton Place - Nostalgia Central   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Based on Grace Metalious's steamy best-selling novel, this romantic and tempestuous drama was set in the small New England town of Peyton Place, a community seething with extramarital affairs and dark secrets of every kind.
The set grew from a few houses around a square to include shops, a factory, a hospital, a fire station and a wharf and the plots grew so complex that new viewers could no longer follow them and the change to thrice weekly episodes ultimately proved a mistake and the show was cancelled.
The main characters reappeared in 1972 in Return To Peyton Place (NBC), a daytime soap opera with an entirely different cast, but audiences were unimpressed and it ended after only 50 episodes.

This is a movie which deals with some pretty tough subjects, which were presented in all of their sleazy glory in the novel but which have been tastefully toned down for the film, and as a result they are all the more effective.
