Morels, Truffles, and Related Cup-Fungi Database   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The morels (members of the genus Morchella) are among the best known members of the group among the general public and are one of the fungi gathered in quantity by both recreational and commercial mushroom hunters.
PezWeb provides several strands of information on Pezizales, and is being used as a test bed for development of software tools for querying web based databases.
A preliminary checklist of the Pezizales from this region, base on literature citations, specimens deposited in herbaria, and collections of the principal investigators is available.

This phylogenetic hypothesis recognizes Pezizales as basal and supports Nannfeldt's hypothesis (1932) of a primitive apothecial ascomata with subsequent evolution of perithecial and cleistothecial forms.
Towards a subordinal classification of the Pezizales (Ascomycota): Phylogenetic analyses of SSU rDNA sequences.
Phylogenetic analyses of partial SSU rDNA sequences from representatives of 36 pezizales associated genera are presented, including new sequences from 28 species: Aleuria aurantiaca, Ascodesmis sphaerospora, Boudiera acanthospora, Caloscypha fulgens, Cheilymenia stercorea, Cookeina sulcipes, Desmazierella acicola, Geopyxis carbonaria, Hydnotrya tulasnei, Iodophanus carneus, Microstoma protracta, Otidea leporina, Paurocotylis pila, Peziza succosa and P.

In order to be considered a member of the Pezizales a fungus must meet certain criteria.
Many of the Leotiales that form cup-shaped apothecia tend to be small and tough and relatively more persistent; many more Leotiales than Pezizales fruit on grass culms, berry canes, twigs, woody catkins, dead leaves, and similar materials; relatively fewer fruit on soil.
The "earth tongues" and similar kinds that resemble fleshy small clubs or pancake turners are likely to be members of the Leotiales or the basidiomycetes if fleshy; some members of the Leotiales have a cap-like "head" and resemble strange mushrooms with no gills, asci on the upper surface, and (sometimes) a rather fibrous stalk.

ICOM II Abstract: Egger2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Members of the Pezizales form mycorrhizae with a variety of hosts in a diversity of habitats.
The importance of mycorrhizal in this group may be underestimated, as some Pezizales, notably E-strain types, have a smooth, thin mantle that often results in them being overlooked in mycorrhizal studies that focus on collection of taxa with more robust mantles.
This paper updates recent phylogenetic work on taxa of the Pezizales, and discusses these data in relation to the phylogeny, ecology and distribution of mycorrhiza-forming members of this diverse group of fungi.

 PEZIZALES in the Pacific Northwest
The operculate cup-fungi (Pezizales) include most, but not all, of the large fleshy cup-fungi found in the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain region.
This differentiation is therefore based upon a microscopic character that is visible neither to the naked eye or even through the use of a handlens.
Several histological stains and mounting reagents routinely used in the identification of the Pezizales are given with their formulation instructions in the appendix.

 Chapter 4b  Ascomycete survey
As you may have guessed by now, this group sits uneasily among the other ascomycetes, and one eminent authority grouped the Taphrinales with the smut fungi (see order Ustilaginales in Chapter 5c); both are yeast-like when grown in axenic culture.
Only by examining a series of microscopic characters, and considering some intermediate forms that trace the probable course of evolution in the group (a set of diagrams given earlier) can we tell that these fungi are related to the 'operculate discomycetes.'
The 'inoperculate discomycetes.' The apothecial ascomata are superficially similar to those of the Pezizales, but the asci are inoperculate, and usually have amyloid apical rings.

 Mycorrhizal Citations
The objectives of this study were to determine which Pezizales appeared as sporocarps after a prescribed fire in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, and whether species of Pezizales formed mycorrhizas on ponderosa pine, whether or not they were detected from sporocarps.
However, 15% (6/39) of the RFLP types obtained from mycorrhizal roots within 32 soil cores were ascomycetes.
Phylogenetic analyses of the 18S nuclear ribosomal DNA gene indicated that four of the six RFLP types clustered with two genera of the Pezizales, Wilcoxina and Geopora.
