It can often be read that the Western Front was a continues line trenches approximately 400 miles long and stretching from Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast in the west, to Pfetterhouse on the Swiss border in the east.
After visiting the Western Front for a decade we realized we had seen places spaced over the whole of this front except the most eastern part: the French departments of the Vosges and Alsace.
It was at Pfetterhouse where the 'End of the Line' was.

 HELLFIRE CORNER - Cycling the Line
Pfetterhouse on the Swiss border is the southern extremity of the Front and was about four miles to the south of Seppois and we were going north.
The plan was to leave our panniers at the hotel, ride to Pfetterhouse to start the ride and then collect the bags on the way through.
The plan was to lay one of these cards at war memorials, battle sites and war cemeteries along the way and we each carried fifty of them with plastic holders that we could stick into the ground if there was no other way of securing the card.

As reported in the June magazine, Nigel Petrie - Chairman of AD Group and Dedicated Micros – and Peter Vince a solicitor from Sussex, were making a 500-mile, nine-day cycle journey in aid of charity.
They cycled from Pfetterhouse in Switzerland to cover the 500-mile former Western Front, the World War One battle-line.
With the support of the Royal British Legion, the men sought to raise awareness of “the Line” and, under the wheels4freedom project collect the £12,000 required for three electric wheel chairs to transform the lives of war veterans.

This was at Pfetterhouse, a small village about 18 miles south-east of Belfort.
A few miles west of Pfetterhouse is the village of Joncherey.
This is where the first casualties of the war on the Western Front occurred in one of the border incidents that preceded the formal declarations of war.

 Poignant ride to help veterans
Nigel Petrie, chairman of Warrington-based CCTV specialists AD Group, cycled 500 miles along the Western Front, the scene of some of the most costly battles of World War I. Mr Petrie, who completed the journey with his friend Peter Vince, hopes to raise £12,000 for wheels4freedom to buy electric wheelchairs for war veterans.
The nine-day journey from Pfetterhouse in Switzerland to Nieuwpoort in Belgium took the pair through the notorious battlefields of Verdun, the Somme and Flanders and Ypres.
Mr Petrie, who has cycled 8,000 miles and raised £80,000 with Mr Vince for the Macmillan Fund, Help the Hospices and the Prostate Cancer Charity, said it was the toughest ride he has embarked on.

Two British cyclists are embarking on a cycle ride along the line of the Western Front to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
