Pfizer buys Vicuron for $1.9 billion - Boston.com - Business
Pfizer paid $1.3 billion in 2003 to acquire Esperion Therapeutics Inc., which is developing a cholesterol drug whose sales Pfizer hopes will exceed those of its cholesterol-fighter Lipitor, the world's top-selling drug at $10-billion.
Pfizer hopes the acquisition will help it offset lost sales from its anti-fungal treatment Diflucan, which recently lost patent protection, and an expected slide in sales of its antibiotic Zithromax, which could face generic competition later this year.
Pfizer also has an existing research deal with Vicuron to develop next-generation oxazolidinones, the first new class of antibiotics in more than 30 years.

The New York Times > Business > The Company: The Fallout From Celebrex
Pfizer's announcement yesterday that patients in a cancer study who used Celebrex had a heightened incidence of heart attacks left lawyers wondering whether the legal troubles will grow to match those of Merck, which withdrew its own painkiller, Vioxx, from the market on Sept. 30.
Pfizer said yesterday that it continued to believe that Celebrex, which has been prescribed for more than 26 million patients, is safe and that it had no plans to stop selling the drug.
Two months ago, Pfizer was talking about financing research to show that Celebrex, the world's most widely prescribed painkiller, might help prevent heart attacks.

Pfizer ( PFE : Research, Estimates) said Wednesday that the Viagra Value Card program is available to men who pay for their entire prescription, or the part of it not covered by insurance, out of their own pocket, but not to those using co-payments or Medicare.
Viagra is still a huge drug for Pfizer, as it brought in sales of about $1.9 billion in 2003, up 8 percent from a year earlier, according to the company's annual regulatory filing.
Hazlett said he has a "buy" rating on Pfizer, but the erosion of Viagra's market share is one of his main concerns about the company, along with a longer-term concern about generic competition for its top selling drug Lipitor.

Pfizer said it had warned cardholders for months it would discontinue the card program on August 31, and encouraged them to sign up for other discount cards available under a new Medicare program that began in June, reported the Times.
But consumer advocates said the new program was so confusing that it had asked Pfizer to keep its discount card until 2006, when prescription drugs become a standard part of Medicare benefits, said the newspaper.
The newspaper said under the former Pfizer card a 30-day supply of the popular cholesterol treatment Lipitor had cost $15, compared with $68 at one Internet pharmacy or $43.32 at one Canadian Web site.

Pfizer’s historic stock price is positively skewed thereby indicating that it is not normally distributed about the mean.
Thus, we fail to reject the Null hypothesis and conclude that the Pfizer’s mean stock price is not different from the sample of 100 at the 95 percent confidence interval.
Based on the results generated from the regression analysis we chose ten stocks (5 Positive and 5 Negative) that impact on DJIA and tested each individual stock null hypothesis based on the population mean and standard deviation and a sample of 100 randomly selected monthly closing stock prices.
