This is consistent with the inclusion of Phacopida as one of the Librostoma (Fortey 1990).
The unity of the suborders Calymenina, Cheirurina and Phacopina via similar ontogeny has been accepted by the vast majority of trilobite workers.
Since ontogeny patterns define the Phacopida, the search for the sister group will likely require an assessment of the protaspides and meraspides of candidate taxa (such as Calymenidius).

Most Phacopida treated herein occur in strata of the Lower Caradoc Nemagraptus gracilis Zone, which Brussa (1994, 1996) recognizes through 150 metres in the upper part of the Las Aguaditas Formation.
A calymenid is documented from the Paraglossograptus tentaculatus Zone/Eoplacognathus suecicus Zone, of Llanvirn age.
One of the few members of the Phacopida identified by Baldis and Pothe (1995), Platycalymene trapezoidalis, is revised on the basis of more complete material and its affinities are reevaluated.

This is a nice prone example of Phacops speculator (Order Phacopida, Suborder: Phacopina; Superfamily: Phacopoidea; Family: Phacopidae), a classic trilobite of the Devonian strata of Morocco (Hamar Laghdad Formation – near Erfoud, Morocco).
It has a natural dark brown exoskeleton, nicely preserved, and contrasting beautifully with the light reddish-brown matrix.
As a member of Order Phacopida, this trilobite shares the distinction of schizochroal eyes only with other members of the Order.

This new specimen is dated to 395 MYA, belongs to the Order Phacopida and is named Erbenochile erbeni.
Trilobites normally have two kinds of eyes – holochroal made up of many (up to a thousand) minute lenses, and schizochroal with fewer larger biconvex lenses often separated by sclera (includes the Phacopida).
This fossil has eyes that are like twin towers with 560 lenses in vertical rows of 18 that are curved strongly from front to back.

They share several characters with the Ptychopariida (including a few species with natant hypostomes), so although the hypostomal condition of the Phacopida is typically conterminant (and impendent in some advanced Phacopina), which implies that they may have origininated with the natant Ptychopariida, making the Phacopida another late addition to the Libristomate subclass.
However, many people point out their hypostomal condition, which ended at the same time, and similarities in the exoskeleton tuberculation of the Phacopida and Lichida orders.
Therefore, the sister group of the Phacopida remains unclear and debateable.

Only two orders survived the Late -Devonian extinction events, the Phacopida and the Proetida.

Their grouping mainly derives from a shared and differentiating form during the early protaspid larval form period.
The Calymenina share hypostomal characteristics with Order Ptychopariida, and Phacopida exhibits similar tuberculation with Lichida, confounding the Phacopids closest sister group.

The abundance's were actually extremely abundant fragments, they were just all over the place, but it would have been nice to find a nice mold of a whole trilobite, they were found in other formations of the Ordovician.
Overall we found abundant fragments of the Order Phacopida in the Waynesville formation.
This is an unaltered hard part remain of trilobite, probably from the pygidium and merely demonstrates that trilobites did exist in this assemblage.
