The Fucales is an order of the Phaeophyta that does not possess an independant sexual gametophyte, sexual gametes are produced directly by the sporophyte generation and these fuse to form new sporophytes.
The gametes are borne by special fertile branches (the extruded eggs form tufts that are attached by mucous threads to the reproductive branches), they are not washed away eventhough most species live in heavy surf.
Phaeophyta is usually a yellowish-brown colour with fl or grey tinges due to the pigments they contain (chlorophyll a & b, additional pigments including fucoxanthin, which is brown).

The largest of the chromists are the Phaeophyta, the brown algae -- the largest brown algae may reach over 30 meters in length.
The rockweed shown at left, Fucus distichous, visible at low tide at the Berkeley Marina in California, is somewhat smaller.
The "puffy" regions attached to the blades are receptacles, structures in which the gametes are produced.
