  E-Budo.com - Ong-Bak/ Phanom Yeerum
The story is pretty standard, but Yeerum's fighting style is a dynamic combination of Muay Thai and Chinese Kung-Fu (as a guess), and has a fairly unique feel to it, compared to everything else out there these days.
Yeerum is young enough to make a big name for himself.
I remember waiting for the "action" to start, and seeing Phanom knock out this guy with a fast knee-kick to the head (if you don't know what this is, you'll have to take a look).

Phanom Yeerum is so naturally well-built and so well trained that he could become a new Asian star.
Phanom’s character starts out promising to be non-violent but seems to enjoy fighting as the story develops.
Because Phanom is better at action than acting, the director uses him in a simple storyline that takes the character from his upcountry home to Bangkok in search of the stolen Buddha image, where he meets a fellow villager.

The quickness of Jet Li, the acrobatics of Jackie Chan and the fierceness of Bruce Lee are all the things Phanom has to offer in his role as Boonting, who leaves his peaceful village in order to find the head of their Buddha statue called Ong Bak.
Phanom is incredible- when the movie slowly progressed we saw his skills increase and become more and more impressive.
Phanom does triple summersaults that turn into kicks, no handed cartwheels into punches and moves I’ve never seen before turned into a combination of punches and kicks only the Hulk could survive.

Movie Review | Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior (2003) Prachya Pinkaew, Tony Jaa
Yeerum stars as Ting, a country fighter sent into the city to retrieve his village's good luck charm, a Buddha statue called Ong-bak.
As our lead, Yeerum is required to do very little as an actor, and his character actually has fewer lines than Arnold had in the first "Terminator" movie.
Phanom Yeerum could pass for Jason Scott Lee's younger brother, and has the grace and agility of Jackie Chan, but the "touch me and I'll kill you " fierceness of Jet Li.

The aptly named Phanom (Phanom, Phenom, geddit ?) puts all the ancient kung fu masters to shame with his unique combination of freak athleticism and martial art skill.
Thanks to the great fighting choreography and the amount of skill Yeerum and co. possess, almost every fight scene is a standout, but the second string of fights in the seedy brawling joint and the thrilling climax are the ones to remember.
Yeerum himself is pretty much a shy, reclusive figure with a mousey voice of sorts, but luckily it's usually his limbs (and the pointy ends of them) who do the talking in this one.

Why Jackie Chan, well the star of this movie Phanom performs his own stunts, and amazing they are indeed.
The story bases around Boonting (Phanom Yeerum) an extremely skilled athletic and muay thai performer.

slant // magazine.com: Film Review - Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior
The story of a peasant, Ting (Phanom Yeerum), sent to Bangkok to retrieve the stolen head of his village's Buddha statue, Ong-Bak suggests a cheesy Karate Kid knock-off but quickly reveals itself as a no-holds-barred pageantry of martial arts wizardry obviously indebted to Chan and his Drunken Master films.
Despite the country-mouse/city-mouse ethics that underscore Ting's rocky relationship to village refugee Dirty Balls (Petchtai Wongkamlao), the back-home politicking scarcely registers throughout the film, and considering the corniness of the events surrounding the theft of the Ong-Bak statue, that's more or less a good thing.
In the end, the rail-thin plot is simply an excuse to have Ting bust shit up, but the plight of little man is nonetheless evoked in Yeerum's able performance and director Prachya Pinkaew's awesome, wildly aestheticized fight sequences.

Either way, Ong Bak is a kung fu movie in the rough, down-and-dirty old style, stripped of all fanciness and myth, little more than a camera pointed at a guy who really, really knows how to do martial arts.
The guy in question is Phanom Yeerum (Tony Jaa in goofy transliterated form) as Ting, and the martial art is Muay Thai kickboxing.
Ong Bak is a good hearty dose of classic kung fu, a natural movie pick for anybody who could look into his or her heart and honestly say, "Y'know, Bloodsport was kinda cool." And isn't that everyone, deep down?

It soon becomes the task of a young man, Boonting (Phanom Yeeram), to track the thief down to Bangkok voluntarily and reclaim the religious treasure.
Along the way, Boonting uses his astonishing athleticism and traditional Muay Thai skills to combat his adversaries.

I'll definitely wait for the next Phanom Yeerum movie.

Part of the reason I'm hestiant to make a definitive comparison is that this is the first time we've seen Phanom Yeerum.
We've been seeing Jackie fights for decades and he's still managed to make them wonderful and exciting even if similar moves (kick high, spin around, kick low and knock the guy over) are employed with regularity.
I think only after five or ten more Phanom Yeerum flicks will his fight scenes reveal their genuine excellence.

Feb 9 2005, 06:22 PM The movie stars "Tony Jaa" Phanom Yeerum, a longtime Thai stuntman that isn't exactly a newcomer.
He's relatively new to starring roles, only having and sharing a half dozen or so in low budget Thai action films, but he's been doing insane stunts since Edison Chen was in diapers.
He did all the stunt doubling for Robin Shou (Liu Kang) in both Mortal Kombat movies and was a part of the Thai action association for a long time along with coach and fight choreographer for Ong Bak (and assistant choreographer for Yeerum's upcoming films Tom Yum Goong and Ong Bak 2), Panna Rittikrai.

While some of the fight scenes are outright fabulous, the acting is largely awful and the script is flimsy and shallow.

Ong-Bak stars Phanom Yeerum as the earnest Ting, a martial-arts hero to the little backwater Thai village of Ong-Bak.
The very first scene has him competing in a brutal variant of capture-the-flag, which involves climbing a tree naked and throwing everyone else off the branches with one's bare hands (or feet, or whatever else is handy).
