That said, the danger in hooking up with such a studio-savvy pair is the sheer force of their dominance, and unless an artist has real vision, the star of the show will inevitably be the ensuing sonics, not the songs.
While fledgling pop combo Phantom Planet write breezy, accessible, jangly, upbeat songs that only occasionally speak to darker themes (the mildly cynical "Turn Smile Shift Repeat" and wistful "One Ray of Sunlight"), The Guest feels maddeningly measured, as if every chiming guitar part were scripted and directed for maximum sheen.
Phantom Planet's "The Guest" is a good album with several good songs, but a couple things hurt its rating.

Scifilm -- Reviews, THE PHANTOM PLANET (1961)
Most movie critics would probably lump THE PHANTOM PLANET with 50s science fiction simply because it looks like a fifties SF movie—it's filmed in the same style, the rockets and costumes have the same basic look, it has a giant mutant monster, etc. However, I would argue that it is actually a transitional work.
Although in and of itself THE PHANTOM PLANET is a minor work, I think it is important simply because it is an early example of the changing trend in science fiction filmmaking in the 1960s.
We only see one solarite in its entirety—a prisoner on the phantom planet—and only thing menacing about it is the fact that it is so tall (it was played by Richard Kiel who later went on to fame as the giant villain Jaws in several James Bond movies).

Phantom Planet has a unique sonic 'attack' in that its three guitarists - Greenwald, Jacques Brautbar and Darren Robinson - really take the time to come up with great guitar 'arrangements'.
I've no idea why they called themselves what they did, let alone why they used pseudonyms like Phantom, X, Y and Z, unless it was a semi-deliberate attempt to pull the wool over the public's eyes (see: Klaatu).

Phantom Planet : Phantom Planet Is Missing - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
For a debut album from a relatively young band (most of the members are still teenagers), Phantom Planet Is Missing is very accomplished and appealing.
Instead of taking the route that many other younger alternative rock bands take (Silverchair's grunge or Eve 6's punk), Phantom Planet walk the line between pop and alternative and manage to carve out their own unique sound -- a rarity for younger alternative bands.
Unfortunately, the album didn't sell nearly as well as albums by Silverchair or Eve 6, but it did manage to build a cult following and the single "So I Fall Again" was featured on the soundtrack to the TV series Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
