Henry Thornton Wharton's Life of Sappho, Peitho's Web edition, part 2
The story of Sappho's love for Phaon, and her leap from the Leucadian rock in consequence of his disdaining her, though it has been so long implicitly believed, does not seem to rest on any firm historical basis.
Still Phaon, for all the myths that cluster round his name, for his miraculous loveliness and his insensibility to love, may yet have been a real personage.
The people used, it is said, to tie numbers of birds to the limbs of the condemned and cover them with feathers to break the force of their fall, and then send boats to pick them up.

Xanthe was thinking of Phaon as she sat beside the spring, but her brow wore such a defiant frown that she did not bear the most distant resemblance to a maiden giving herself up to tender emotions.
Phaon had followed the direction of her look, and again broke the silence, saying with a smile, no less quietly than before: "Yes, indeed, the sun tells me I've been sleeping here a long time; it is almost noon." The youth's composure aroused a storm of indignation in Xanthe's breast.
Xanthe was resting her head on Phaon's breast, while he bent down and kissed her eyes, her mouth, and at last--who ever did such things in her young days?--even her delicate little nose.

Yet Phaon's aasociations are not exclusively with Hermetica and hydraulics, for as he contemplates his imminent arrival in Mitylene in Lyrics XLVIII and XLIX he reveals that, amongst other gifts for Elappho, he has "brought from Tyre/ A Pan-flute.
In the remaining lyrics of the Phaon Group, a Sappho who, it must be emphasized, is still largely or wholly ignorant of the Eleusinian Mysteries and, hence, of the possibility of eternal life for mortals as for gods, continues to ponder the prospect of impending extinction.
The Phaon Group thus closes with a cruel inversion of the theme of arrival and the sense of anticipation with which it began.

By the 17th and 18th centuries, she was a stock character in Latin, French and English pornography, and the term 'Sapphist' (later followed by 'Lesbian') began to circulate as a popular synonym for 'tribade'.
Seemingly at odds with the homosexual identification, however, was the curious legend of Sappho's disastrous passion for Phaon, a handsome young ferryman whose rejection of her is said to have prompted her suicide.
Phaon, Prins notes, is mentioned in some of the first poems in Long Ago as a figure for 'the ravages of heterosexual desire', but banished from later poems, as Bradley and Cooper attempt to reclaim between them an all-female imaginary space, or textual 'field', in which love between women can flourish.

Sappho and Phaon by DAVID, Jacques-Louis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The painting Sappho and Phaon was commissioned by the wealthy Russian diplomat and art collector Prince Nicolas Yusupov, who lived in Paris from 1808 to 1811.
However, she fell in love with the beautiful youth Phaon, the protégé of Venus, and when he only briefly reciprocated her love, she leapt to her death from the rocks at Leucadia.
Though this theme of legendary or mythological lovers was similar to that of The Loves of Paris and Helen of 1788, in this painting the couple are not totally self-absorbed and instead look out at the viewer, Phaon staring intensely and Sappho intoxicated with delight at her lover's touch.

As the whole plant, with its flowers and fruit, is contained in the sprouting seed, so, too, in the youngest girl lives the future mother, who dries all tears, cheers and consoles.
Phaon had been so accustomed to be always called upon whenever there were any of the little girl's playthings to mend that he obeyed, and the next day allowed her to persuade him to do many things for which he felt no inclination.

 Anna Louisa Karsch as Sappho
Even as Gleim dismisses as legendary the story of Sappho’s passion for Phaon leading to her dramatic death, he reinforces the image of Sappho as a poet whose poetry emanates from her emotions and confirms the image of Sappho as the paradigmatic female poet who expresses female desire.
From early on, Sappho becomes the cipher for female poetic achievement and for female expression of erotic desire, however divergently that desire is described, and her poetic power is said to be lost and gained in conjunction with her amorous affairs.
Perhaps Phaon was exhausted rather than indifferent, Bayle suggests.( 11) His telling identification with the mythic Phaon suggests both a fantasy of being pursued by such a passionate and demanding lover as Sappho and a glee in imagining that a woman so transgressive of gender roles, in literature and in life, would receive her comeuppance.
