The name pharaoh was given to this little ant under the false belief that it had been responsible for one of the plagues of Egypt, during the reign of the pharaohs.
Pharaoh ants are amongst the smallest ants; workers are around 1/16-inch long (1.5-2.0mm). The color varies from yellow to reddish, with a slightly darker abdomen.
This ant prefers a warm (86°F/ 30°C), humid (80% moisture) environment. It is only found outdoors in subtropical areas such as Florida and Hawaii.  Here they nest in leaf litter, flowerpots and rain gutters debris.  In temperate climates, however the pharaoh ant cannot survive outdoors through-out the entire year and instead seeks heated buildings.

The pavement ant also has a pair of spines on the thorax but the nodes are much more distinct and the head and some areas on the thorax are grooved.

Ants continually face dynamic organisational problems and have been evolving to manage these problems for 80 million years.
Ants, as eusocial insects, have co-operative brood care, and may also co-operate in many other processes such as colony waste disposal, nest building, collective defence and foraging.
This requires the societies to be well-organised, and the high level of organisation produced means that they are not only able to cope with the huge number of individuals, but reap cooperative benefits from their large colony size.
