Phaseolus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phaseolus is a genus in the family Fabaceae of about fifty plant species, all native to the Americas.
For example, older literature refers to the mung bean as Phaseolus aureus, whereas more modern sources classify it as Vigna radiata.
Phaseolus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Common Swift, Garden Dart, Ghost Moth Hypercompe albicornis, Hypercompe icasia and The Nutmeg.

Tissue Cultures of Phaseolus - Review and Recent Developments   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The utilization of embryo cultures in Phaseolus for the development of interspecific hybrids was first reported by Honma (7).
The identification of parental combinations producing high frequency of hybrid embryos and the improvement of survival of seedlings during transition period (from sterile to normal environment) would permit the routine generation of interspecific hybrids.
The manipulation of Phaseolus tissues in culture provides a useful tool in the investigation of the genetic regulation of hormonal function and metabolism.

 BeanRef - Phaseolus polytene chromosomes
Their general appearance differs between species, what can be primarily understood on the basis of different species-specific structures of the diploid interphase nuclei (Nagl et al., 1983; Nagl, in press).
In Phaseolus coccineus and P.vulgaris (and sometimes in different other species), polyteny occurs in the basal giant cells of the embryo-suspensor (review: Nagl, 1974).
Except the nucleolus-organizing chromosomes, the Phaseolus mitotic and polytenic chromosomes are hardly distinguished.

Applicability of the Phaseolus example to the general problem
The challenges and problems faced by a plant breeder who is considering the utilization of wild Phaseolus are similar to those associated with many other wild genetic resources.
Like many major food crops, beans of the genus Phaseolus have a “dangerously small germplasm base” in most developed and developing countries beyond their centres of origin (US National Academy of Sciences, 1972).
Better surveys are needed for many other genera of economic plants, given what is assumed to be their conservation status at this time (Lyman, 1984).
