TrekWars - The Furry Conflict: Phasers
Phaser operation is dependent on a short-lived subatomic particle called a rapid nadion, which is a nuclear disruptor.
Phasers are commonly deployed in one of three basic configurations aboard starships and starbases: cannons, banks, and arrays, but other groups are known to have applied phaser technology to different application.
Phaser cannons are often still found on Federation space stations and other facilities, although their design commonly differs from those used back in the early 23rd century.

FSD : Starship Opeations : Weapon and Defense Systems
Phasers are a Federation vessel's primary defense weapon, gathered in a series of high-powered arrays at key locations on the hull.
Under normal conditions, however, phasers are a formidable and adaptable defense; for example, the harmonics of the beam can be adjusted to cut through solid rock when needed for rescue missions.
Pulse phaser cannons have begun to be installed on newer starships as primary weapons along with phaser arrays.

Handheld Phasers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
At low power settings - setting 1 to 3 on a hand phaser - the impact of phaser energy is almost wholly limited to simple electromagnetic and mild thermal effects.
At levels higher than 7 the majority of phaser energy is in the form of nuclear disruption.
Early models of the type 2 phaser used a type 1 phaser clipped into a pistol grip, but modern weapons seem to have little in common with the smaller model.

Personal phasers were first developed by Starfleet in the 23rd century as a defensive beam weapon for use by personnel heading into uncertain situations.
The Type 2 phasers of 2266 were mostly casing, incorporating the smaller Type 1 phaser giving it a greater power output.
The Type 2 phaser of the 2270s were elongated and less bulky with a wider beam emitter.

Phaser Disintegrations: When a phaser is set on a high enough setting, a person will disintegrate.
The particles must have mass because phaser beams are known to propagate at distinctly sublight speeds in certain situations (particularly hand phaser beams), and they appear to be very short-lived and can't propagate through gases, or across the gaps between a victim's shoes and the ground.
That would leave shield recharge rates low, all standard phasers would be less powerful, and the cannon would be useless for a brief to moderate time, again depending on ship design.

A type of phaser developed by Starfleet Security to operate in conditions where normal phasers are useless.
It was a prototype developed by Starfleet Security to operate in energy dampening fields or radiogenic environments where a normal phaser would be useless.
Starfleet abandoned it in favor of regenerative phasers; but Lt. Chu'lak replicated one which he modified using an exographic targeting sensor and a microtransporter to beam the bullets to the location of his victim.

Phasers set on high settings not only mean bye-bye victim, but bye-bye nearby objects as well.
Phasers can also be set for overload, a process where all the energy remaining within the power cell is released explosively.
Newer Type Ten Phasers are set up in a Phaser array on the underside of the saucer section of the ship, and can fire in an almost 360 degree arc (with the exception of directly aft of the ship, which is covered by another array in the stern).

Star Trek Vs. Star Wars - The Battle of Britain :: Lightsabers vs. Phasers
The first picture demonstrates almost nothing, other than that "phaser sweeping" (that is, firing a phaser beam in one direction, then moving the weapon to destroy a group of enemies within the path taken by the beam or to correct faulty aim) was impractical or impossible during that particular era of Star Trek.
That would also suggest that TOS phasers would have to be useless from a moving vehicle (another downgrade, this time from the phase cannon-equipped shuttlepod from "Detained"[ENT]).
The pulse phasers used by the Defiant throughout Deep Space Nine demonstrate that the impact of a phaser is significantly more damaging than a phaser beam would be, if multiple shots are fired in succession.

Phasers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Phaser is an acronym for PHASed Energy Rectification, a term which referred to the original process by which stored or supplied energy was converted to another form for release toward the target without any need for an intermediate energy transformation.
Phaser energy is released by the rapid nadion effect.
As of 2364 this was the heaviest weapon in use aboard Federation vessels, comprising the main armament of the Galaxy class starship.

 Star Trek Phasers
Therefore, we know that the phaser reaction most likely transforms matter into neutrinos, we know that it occurs in a chain reaction which feeds off the victim's mass, and we know that there is some sort of "threshold" for this reaction, below which the phaser weapon merely adds thermal energy to the target.
Since we already know that phasers operate on some sort of chain reaction, and that they must derive much of their energy from the target itself, this is not a surprise.
Against shields, phasers appear to be tactically equivalent to 300 TW plasma cannons and 30,000 to 40,000 TW laser cannons.

KlingonAcademy.com Discussion Board - TNG phasers...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
An arc with 3 or 4 phasers in it can fire 2 phasers every 3 seconds or one recharge and an arc with 5 or 6 phasers can fire 3 every 3 seconds or one recharge.
Unfortunately this doesn't work for an arc with and odd number of phasers as well, unless, we could increase the recharge rate of the phasers to 6 seconds maybe, this could be a better compromise.
The other option is to just give each arc one phaser with a 3 second recharge and calculate the damage of the phaser based upon what type of phaser it is multiplied by how many phasers should be in that arc under original KA specs.

Phasers on Stun: Non-Lethal Beam Weapons - American Antigravity
The goal was to develop a non-lethal, neuromuscular disruptor which works through the air without need of wires or direct contact to have an effect.
The medical literature on the ocular hazard of ultraviolet laser radiation indicates that, at the wavelength and fluence of the tetanizing weapon, there is little possibility of injury to the cornea and none to the retina or the other internal structures of the eye.
HSV's approach is a bit different than mine had been -- their focus is on non-lethal weapons that can disable an attacker without causing permanent damage, and their patent combines the laser ionization technology with an effective tetanizing high-voltage frequency -- similar to that found in commercial Taser™ products.

Let's assume that a sidearm akin to a Star Trek phaser exists, and that it's good for say, oh, 100 shots on stun, and 25 on vaporize, before you have to swap in a fresh battery pack.
Q3) Let's assume that in the case of the "stun only" phaser, the law and the courts rightly support the notion that unjustified stunning is in fact criminal assault and battery.
Their fear of an armed victim would be reduced, knowing that they're unlikely to die or suffer permanent damage, although their chances of capture and incarceration would go up.

 RSA: Lightsabers vs Phasers
Such a pattern of fire would be worse than useless with a weapon that maintained such an ability, because the additional "splintered" shots from the phaser would be significantly less accurate than the "phaser sweep" method of combat.
The setting on this phaser, is clearly designed to deliver the maximum damage indiscriminately to an area as quickly as possible.
Assuming that a Jedi could block such fire using his lightsaber, such a pattern of fire would be incapable of affecting him, except at very close range, because most of the shots would miss their target.

It was interesting to see the "old" phasers that looked a little bit like something out of Buck Rogers.
It had what looked like a monitor with a close up of the guy she was aiming at, with cross hairs that moved till she got lined up with the shot she wanted.
Also, if you read the tech manuals,(and yes I am geek enough to do that,) you will find that there are tracking sensors in the phasers, so all you have to do is point, and it does the rest of the aiming.

`Set Phasers on Stun' demonstrates - - with shocking and graphic candor - - how technological failures result from the incompatibilities between the way things are designed and the way people actually perceive, think, and act.
New technologies will succeed or fail based on our ability to minimize these incompatibilities between the characteristics of people and the characteristics of the things we create and use.
