phaser (additional info and facts about phaser) - the signal is split, a portion is filtered (additional info and facts about filtered) with an all-pass filter to produce a phase-shift, and then the unfiltered and filtered signals are mixed.
The phaser effect was originally a simpler implementation of the flanger effect since delays were difficult to implement with analog equipment.
Phasers are often used to give a "synthesized" or electronic effect to natural sounds, such as human speech.

 Encyclopedia: Phaser (effect)
A phaser is an audio signal processor used to filter a signal by attenuating a series of "notches" in the frequency spectrum.
Phasers are mostly found as plugins for sound editing software, as a part of a monolithic rackmount sound effect unit, and as "stompbox" guitar effects.
A flanger is a type of phaser where the notches are uniformly spaced, in particular, where the notches are created by mixing the signal with a delayed version of a signal.

Better Guitar Review - Maxon Rotary Phaser   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Phasers were one of the “standard” effects of the late 60’s and throughout the 70’s.
When using two amps, the phaser effect comes out the A jack, and the B jack outputs the dry signal.
It is capable of a wide variety of phasing effects (including flanging and vibrato) from classic to extreme, and has a unique vocal quality to it.

 Sound effect
In the mid 1920s, the advances in recording technology with improved electronic microphones allowed for the practice of having pre-recorded repertories of sound effects on 78 records.
Often, the delayed chorus signals will be pitch shifted to create a harmony with the original signal.
This effect is used by many less talented pop-music singers unable to hold the pitch.

The sound of people talking in the background is also considered a "BG," but only if the speaker is unintelligible and the language is unrecognizable (this is known as walla).
Analog echo effects are implemented using tape delays and/or spring reverbs.
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin claims to be the inventor of this effect which can be heard in the bridge of Whole Lotta Love.

Maxon PH350 ROTARY PHASER Guitar Effect Pedal
However, their resulting tone simply cannot be replicated using other components a truly liquid, vowel-like, three-dimensional phasing effect that is only compounded by the PH-350's multiple control parameters.
As the phasing stages increase, the effect becomes more dramatic as focus is placed on the upper register harmonics.
The Feedback control is calibrated to reach self-oscillation at either extreme, yielding a further array of bizarre oscillation effects.

 Studio Electronics ModMax Phaser
The Phaser's “indoctrination sheet” says “Don't fear the ModMax,” which is meant to allay the fears of musicians who are not used to a stompbox with so many controls.
I first used the Phaser with my guitar as a standard stompbox phase shifter, keeping the Frequency and Resonance knobs near their centers and playing with the rate and depth controls.
Although the Phaser is fairly idiosyncratic, it doesn't replace traditional stompbox phase shifters, but that may not be its purpose.

I ~thought~ that the original phasers were those dinky little ANALOGUE pedals used by guitarists, using then state-of-the-art 'bucket-brigade' analogue delays.

Studio Electronics Modmax Filter & Phaser
The control layout of the Modmax Phaser is very similar to that of the Filter except that the filter mode switch is replaced by one that selects two, four, or six stages of phasing, corresponding to the analogue phase-shift stages employed by the original phaser pedals.
The basic quality of the effects on offer isn't in dispute, but the controls aren't as intuitive as they might be and it's also rather too easy to end up with a noisy or thumpy-sounding end result if you're not very careful about how you set the controls.
Being able to dial up effects that respond dynamically to the way you play is generally a good thing though, and being able to dynamically blend envelope- and LFO-modulated effects makes it possible to set up sounds that would be impossible by any other means.

This phaser is not just designed for guitars; it works well with basses, keyboards, and even vocals and appears in all of these guises on Dweezil Zappa's Z album, 'Music For Pets,' which reveals its flexible and hip nature.
The rich phasing gives you that classic phaser sound, but also provides the option of adding regeneration to the effect.
It's a high-impact effect that you're not going to use all the time, but when you need it, there is no substitute.

All it has is a colour on/off switch and the rate knob in the middle of the pedal, which obviously controls the sweep rate of the Phaser effect.
I've found that when using distortion, it's more favourable to turn off colour (which merely adds a bassy tone to the sweeping effect), as it sounds more natural and subtle; it doesn't affect the other effects at all.
It provides the subtle effect when Colour is off, and the full blown bassy effect when i switch Colour on.

You need some sort of intelligence or automation to record what you are doing with the rotary buttons.
