  What is Phatic Communication?
A simple wave at a co-worker or a thumbs up signal to a friend can be considered phatic communication, in the same way a routine conversation at the bank would qualify.
Phatic communication is also found every day in the workplace.
While it is important to develop effective phatic communication skills, one must also recognize varying degrees of comfort with the process.

Phatic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In linguistics, a phatic expression is one whose only function is to perform a social task.
For example, "you're welcome" is not intended to convey the message that the hearer is welcome; it is a phatic response to being thanked, which in turn is a phatic whose function is to be polite in response to a gift.
The utterance of a phatic expression is a kind of speech act.

The Distribution of Variable-length Phatic Interjectives on the World Wide Web   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
We believe that the restricted domain of variable-length phatic interjectives is an interesting subset of English that can provide an alternative simple model system of word length distributions.
The frequency distributions of the lengths of these phatic interjectives exhibit clear power-law relationships (Figure 1).
Variable-length interjectives are a small subset of the distribution of words than is usually studied, yet yield interesting behavior and should prove easier to investigate.

 frog Design Mind - Gizmodo
Phatic communication, a term first coined by anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski, is the international linguistic phenomenon of small talk; that is, exchanges meant to provide a social connection rather than transmit information.
First introduced in 1996, these Japanese virtual pets satisfied the profound, hitherto untapped phatic desires of 14 million people to connect to lifelike avatars - hatched, grew, ate, and pooped before dying a slow death, only to be reborn with the click of a button like some digital phoenix rising from LED ashes.
Clearly, manufacturers and consumers alike recognize the profound response to phatic technologies, but ironically the mass consumption, proliferation and market penetration of so many phatic devices herald the tipping point of their acceptance.

 Purposes in Writing
Phatic language (and nonverbal communication) establishes and maintains contacts between speakers or between writer and reader.
Phatic purposes are not significant in most writing.
The use of greetings and closings in letters is one example of phatic purpose in writing.

I also note that the examples of "high phatic" Democtrats given, Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy, were and are widely hated, so phatic communication obviously has its limits.
Note that stereotypical "geeks" are examples of "very low phatic" individuals; they are often baffled or even irritated by others' attempts at phatic communication, and are very bad at phatic responses.
Ronald Reagan would presumably be a great example of a "high phatic" speaker; he had almost nothing of any real substance to say, but golly, didn't he seem fine when saying it.

Jakobson also calls it a "glossing function" an explanation added between the lines or in the margins; and, since he develops an exasperating example of someone whose unfamiliarity with school vocabulary leads to repeated requests for definitions ("The sophomore was plucked"), such requests for "equational definitions" are dull, repetitive, "strictly metalingual" (356), yet somehow vital.
Baudrillard writes: "The phatic function of language, used to establish contact and sustain speech's formal dimension: this function first isolated and described by Malinowski with reference to the Melanesians, then by Jakobson in his grid of language's functions, becomes hypertrophied in the tele-dimension of the communications networks.
So, Phatic communication is primarily (dys)functional; to put it another way, this function is almost immediately tied to its dysfunction: it holds open the channel but in so doing puts genuine communication at risk.

 Levels of Communication
Phatic Communication: Using conventional messages to establish rapport, to break the ice, and/or to end a conversation.
We expect phatic communication at the beginning and end of every conversation, regardless of our feelings about a person.
That is, each conversation ought to begin with phatic communication and move through the levels (however quickly seems appropriate) before moving to the more intimate levels.

 Phatic Communion
Just posting a note to let visitors know I’ve not entirely disappeared from Phatic Communion (or even D5GW for that matter.) The holidays, an impending change in employment, and a yearly redesign of PC have eaten up most of my attention.
Such a method would be queer indeed, because I’d be establishing a new kind of social interaction, I think — unless some other blogger already dedicates a portion of his own blog to posting comments intended for another specific blog.
So the following comment to “Growing Pack Behavior in Juvenile Homo Sapiens” will be revised here on Phatic Communion to HTML-formatting and thus in that particular only will not match the comment I intended to leave but may therefore be more legible.
