The median income for a household in the county was $37,319, and the median income for a family was $44,943.

PHELPS County is situated on the high table-lands, or upland prairies, on the divide between the Platte and Republican Rivers.
In extent it is twenty-four miles square and is bounded on the north by Dawson and Buffalo Counties, on the east by Kearney, on the south by Harlan and on the west by Gosper.
The county seat was located at Williamsburg, in the northwestern part of the county, where it was destined to remain for a number of years, though the place never grew to the dignity of a town.

Phelps Center (once located about seven miles northwest of Holdrege) had been platted that year by Victor Rylander and Leander Hallgren, who had been promoting Swedish settlement in the area since 1873.
This Charles E. Hanson is presently (1989) director of the Museum of the Fur Trade at Chadron, Nebraska, and his son, James A. Hanson is the present director of the Nebraska State Historical Society.
The Buffalo County Historical Society would be grateful for any information or photographs of the 1892 to 1904 period relating to the identity of the Charles E. Hanson house built in East Lawn in 1889.

(Lincoln, NE) — The Nebraska State Patrol has identified the three victims of a Sunday, November 27, 2005, single engine plane crash near Atlanta, in Phelps County, Nebraska.
The 1968 Piper 140 registered to Daniel Walker, crashed into a broadcast tower owned by Nebraska Educational Radio and Television (NET), around 10:45 a.m.
The Phelps County Sheriff’s Office and Phelps County Attorney Tim Hoeft assisted the Patrol in its investigation.

The Plum Creek Massacre Occurred 1 1/2 Miles East of Here August 8th, 1864 The massacre was part of a concerted attack by the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians that ranged from Julesburg, Colorado to the valley of the Little Blue River in Nebraska.
In memory of an unknown child who, from the information available, became seriously ill and died while traveling with a wagon train in 1885 or 1886.
The grave was exposed by erosion in Aug. 1963 and was moved here.
