Phelsuma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The one exception is Phelsuma andamanense, which is endemic to the Andaman islands in the Bay of Bengal.
The genus Phelsuma was first described by the British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1825 and named after the Dutch physician Murk van Phelsum.
Two Phelsuma species (Phelsuma gigas and Phelsuma edwardnewtoni) are now considered to be extinct, probably due to the destruction of their environment by human settlers and their domestic animals.

 Phelsuma borbonica borbonica
Phelsuma borbonica borbonica lives mainly on larger deciduous trees at the sun exposed edges or within the primary forests at higher altitudes.
Phelsuma borbonica borbonica can also be found on human made objects like electricity poles, traffic signs, reservoirs, uninhabited huts and houses, picnic huts, etc. These objects are often used as mass egg depositing places by several females, larger objects like huts are permanently inhabited by several males and many females.
If Phelsuma borbonica mater is recognised as a valid subspecies, then the animals from the eastern regions deserve a subspecies status as well since they are very distinct from the animals in the northern regions like the Terra Typica.

 DAY GECKOS - Phelsuma
The genus Phelsuma originates from the area of the Mascarene Islands, that is to say the huge island of Madagascar (third largest in the world) and neighbouring islands in the Indian Ocean.
Phelsuma species are more delicate than Gekko lizards, however, so do not assume that what will suffice for a Tokay will be adequate for a Gold-Dust Gecko.
One advantage of Phelsuma geckos over the Gekko species is that they are on average smaller in length and less bulky, and can be accommodated more easily.

Rodrigues Day Gecko - Phelsuma edwardnewtonii
Thorough searches in the 1960s and 1970s on all offshore islands/islets have failed to yield any signs of this lizard.
It was noted that this species, like most other Phelsuma, was capable of rapid colour changes.
This lizard was documented as not having a fear of humans and "was very tame, coming to eat fruits in one's hand." They fed on insects, pollen and fruit.

BBC - h2g2 - Captive Care and Breeding of Day Geckos
There are more than 60 species and subspecies of the genus Phelsuma which inhabit Madagascar and the surrounding islands of the Indian Ocean.
Day geckos vary in size, the smallest species being a mere 5cm (Phelsuma kely) while the largest is around 30cm (Phelsuma guentheri).
Both setups have their advantages, the naturalistic will make the gecko feel 'at home', bringing out the true natural behaviour of this species; whereas the basic setup can help the gecko in finding it's food more easily and quicker and also aids the keeper as it is much easier to clean out.
