The one exception is Phelsuma andamanense, which is endemic to the Andaman islands in the Bay of Bengal.
The genus Phelsuma was first described by the British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1825 and named after the Dutch physician Murk van Phelsum.
Two Phelsuma species (Phelsuma gigas and Phelsuma edwardnewtoni) are now considered to be extinct, probably due to the destruction of their environment by human settlers and their domestic animals.

Phelsuma guimbeaui is endemic to Mauritius and occurs from sea level up to heights from 300m in the lowland mountain forests The distribution range is limited to an area along the west coast, the northernmost range being approximately around Port Louis and to the south near Piton du Fouge.
Phelsuma guimbeaui must have hade a wider distribution range before the arrival of man on the island.
The habitat of Phelsuma guimbeaui is the lowland forests of Mauritius where it occurs on mature, larger leaf trees.

I thought Millotosaurus were the most 'primitive' members ans also, the group "P.breviceps, P.mutabilis and P.ocellata' were a distinct group within this Lygodactylus/Phelsuma clade..

Day geckos of the genus Phelsuma are different from other Geckos for several reasons.
Phelsuma have some fairly stringent care requirements, and beginning Day Gecko ; keepers should start with some of the easier to care for species such as ~Phelsuma standingi (Standing’s Day Gecko), ~Phelsuma laticauda (Gold Dust Day Gecko), and ~Phelsuma lineata (Lined Day Gecko).

The most interesting herps which I found at Anakao, and probably the most scientifically important of the entire trip, were three specimens of a rare day gecko Phelsuma breviceps.
I saw six smallish snakes, possibly Liopholidophis lateralis while a particularly handsome specimen of Phelsuma madagascariensis, a type of day gecko, posed quite willingly for several photographs.
Rather than serving as camouflage, the intense green coloration of most day geckos is important for intra-specific recognition and communication.

In the book "Faszinierende Taggeckos" (Phelsuma) the Authors mention studies done by RUSSELL (1972) and JOGER (1985), in which (based on different aspects) they classify an afro-madagassan group with Phelsuma, Ailuronyx, Homopholis, Microscallabotes and Lygodactylus in it...
Later studies (KLUGE, BAUER, JOGER, NUSSBAUM) try to bring more light into this topic, but all seem to agree that Lygodactylus and Phelsuma are sistergroups and share common ancestors...
