The one exception is Phelsuma andamanense, which is endemic to the Andaman islands in the Bay of Bengal.
The genus Phelsuma was first described by the British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1825 and named after the Dutch physician Murk van Phelsum.
Two Phelsuma species (Phelsuma gigas and Phelsuma edwardnewtoni) are now considered to be extinct, probably due to the destruction of their environment by human settlers and their domestic animals.

Phelsuma guentheri is only known presently from an offshore island north-east of Mauritius; Round Island.
In the 17th century, Phelsuma guentheri must still have been present on the main island since sub-fossil eggshells where found on rocks (Jones 1988).
Most Phelsuma guentheri are found on these palms together with Phelsuma ornata but some are also found on lava rock boulders.

Assumption Island day Gecko (''Phelsuma abbotti sumptio'' CHEKE, 1982), named after a small island outlying on the south west end of the Seychelles is a subspecies of geckos.
''Phelsuma v-nigra anjouanensis'' is found on agave bushes, banana trees, palms, human dwellings and even on the ground.
''Phelsuma parkeri'' is often found on different large trees such as bananatrees and palms.

Four species are now restricted to Round Island, Guenther’s gecko (phelsuma guentheri), Telfair’s skink (Leiolopisma telfairi), the keel scale boa (Casarea dussumeri) and the burrowing boa (Bolyeria multocarinata).
Two further species; Bojer’s skink (Gongylomorphus bojeri) and the night gecko (Nactus serpensinsula) are only found on some of the small islands off Mauritius and the night gecko is the distinctive endemic Round Island race durrelli (Arnold and Jones, 1995).
The ornate day gecko (phelsuma ornata) and the Bouton’s skink (Cryptoblepharus boutoni) are widespread on the islands around Mauritius and on mainland Mauritius.

There are more than 60 species and subspecies of the genus Phelsuma living on Madagascar and the surrounding islands of the Indian Ocean.
Day geckos vary in size, the smallest species being a mere 2.5 inch (Phelsuma kely) and of which the largest is around 12 inch (Phelsuma guentheri).
Most of them are bright green or even blue with an attractive pattern on their back.
