The one exception is Phelsuma andamanense, which is endemic to the Andaman islands in the Bay of Bengal.
The genus Phelsuma was first described by the British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1825 and named after the Dutch physician Murk van Phelsum.
Two Phelsuma species (Phelsuma gigas and Phelsuma edwardnewtoni) are now considered to be extinct, probably due to the destruction of their environment by human settlers and their domestic animals.

Phelsuma barbouri (Loveridge 1942) origin from the mountains Ambohimirandrana and Mantsina, Madagascar.
Phelsuma barbouri is an egg-gluer, but not to the point as for instance the Mauritius and Reunion species.
Phelsuma eggs are hard shelled,just like a chicken egg the lack the ability to swell like most other reptile eggs.If putten directly on the moist substrate the eggs will propably go full term,but never hatch.

Phelsuma fascinated me because these lizards that the late Sean McKeown dubbed "the living jewels of the islands of the Indian Ocean" were active and some even seemed curious of activity outside their enclosures.
With their breakaway tails (they will grow back, but never as nice as the original) and their fragile skin, they are display animals not animals to be held and displayed from your hands.
Also similar to chameleons, Phelsuma must be allowed to thermoregulate themselves by moving to areas of the tank with different temperatures.

The reptile was easily spotted as its brown camouflage colours and pattern contrasted with the leafy green bamboo.
Around the same time the first rainforest species of day gecko was found, a Phelsuma seippi that also seemed to prefer the medium sized bamboo.
Seeing these metallic blue geckos with their yellow heads was very exciting for all the team members and was one of the highlights of the expedition.

They are not for beginners (given their small size), but they will make an excellent addition (taking minimal space) for any mid-range to advanced reptile lover.
Review: A new site for me. It’s packed with information about Phelsuma as a whole with range information for the individual Phelsuma species, book suggestions, a collection of articles, and a number of other interesting features.
My only complaint is that the layout can be confusing on certain pages.

Hopefully this project will take off in 2003, but in 2002 we stopped selling these awesome geckos to rebuild our breeding colony, which had gotten old.
This is perhaps the best of the Phelsuma for terrarium keeping, they are incredible in markings, not too shy, and fairly easy to keep.
I find mine watching me any time I am in the gecko room!
