Phelsuma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Day geckos are small lizards of the genus Phelsuma in the Gecko family.
The one exception is Phelsuma andamanense, which is endemic to the Andaman islands in the Bay of Bengal.
The genus Phelsuma was first described by the British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1825 and named after the Dutch physician Murk van Phelsum.

 IWMC.org - 2nd Symposium - Terrestrial Resources - Successful Initiatives
Although detailed demographic studies of natural populations of Phelsuma spp, Furcifer spp and Calumma spp are lacking, data on clutch size, clutch frequency, incubation period, and age at first reproduction are available for several species from captive breeding studies.
Using 10 per cent as a rough estimate of survivorship necessary to maintain population levels, at least 18,000 phelsumas (males and females) per year could be removed from a population that included 1,000 mature females without seriously affecting the population.
For example, at one individual per km2, the total populations of Phelsuma modesta and Furcifer parsoni are calculated to be 15,000 and 60,000 individuals respectively.

 DAY GECKOS - Phelsuma
The genus Phelsuma originates from the area of the Mascarene Islands, that is to say the huge island of Madagascar (third largest in the world) and neighbouring islands in the Indian Ocean.
Phelsuma species are more delicate than Gekko lizards, however, so do not assume that what will suffice for a Tokay will be adequate for a Gold-Dust Gecko.
One advantage of Phelsuma geckos over the Gekko species is that they are on average smaller in length and less bulky, and can be accommodated more easily.
