Phelsuma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The one exception is Phelsuma andamanense, which is endemic to the Andaman islands in the Bay of Bengal.
The genus Phelsuma was first described by the British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1825 and named after the Dutch physician Murk van Phelsum.
Two Phelsuma species (Phelsuma gigas and Phelsuma edwardnewtoni) are now considered to be extinct, probably due to the destruction of their environment by human settlers and their domestic animals.

The Belgian zoologist George Albert Boulenger (1858-1937) classified the genus Phelsuma under the family Gekkonidae in his "Catalogue of the British Museum".
During the late 1970's and 1980's it was the German herpetologist Harald Meier, in the footsteps of Robert Mertens, that contributed to the knowledge of the genus with 12 new taxa, obtained during his many travels to the south western Indian Ocean.

Phelsuma guimbeaui is one of the Phelsuma species originating from the island Mauritius, (the others species are Phelsuma cepediana, Phelsuma rosagularis and Phelsuma ornata).
Phelsuma guimbeaui is a mid size species with a thick body.
Breeding Phelsumas is not very difficult, you need one male and one female and when the circumstances are modest to good, they start breeding quite easily.

 Another Color: Phelsuma
Phelsuma fascinated me because these lizards that the late Sean McKeown dubbed "the living jewels of the islands of the Indian Ocean" were active and some even seemed curious of activity outside their enclosures.
With their breakaway tails (they will grow back, but never as nice as the original) and their fragile skin, they are display animals not animals to be held and displayed from your hands.
Also similar to chameleons, Phelsuma must be allowed to thermoregulate themselves by moving to areas of the tank with different temperatures.

We observed that after that one of the Phelsuma ornata female tried to catch and eat the hatchling, it was emidially scared away by the Phelsuma quadriocellata quadriocellata female.
As for Phelsuma ornata eggs, they are gluers so not much can be done except leave the eggs.
Phelsuma ornata do not often eat their offspring, but again, other species in the enclosure would see the baby as a good quick meal.

Surprisingly but in agreement with data from Peter Sound Phelsuma guimbeaui and Phelsuma rosagularis were more distantly related than for example Phelsuma guimbeaui and Phelsuma ornata.
The last example of that was in the last number of Taggecko when Phelsuma sundbergi ladiguensis and Phelsuma abbotti checkei was crossbred, with live hatchlings as result.
Phelsuma inexpectata was re-classified earlier by Probst et al.

 Evolution on Islands
Given the geographic population structure within P. ornata, it is possible that local populations of these lizards, including those on offshore islands, will differ significantly in their morphological traits.
In the case of Phelsuma, this explanation is supported by the observation that offshore Mauritian islands tend to have fewer species (either one, as on IAA, GQ, GAB, FI, or two on IAB and RI).
We have shown that populations of Phelsuma ornata and P. inexpectata are morphologically distinct, but that the processes responsible for this variation differ for body size, body shape, and head color pattern.

 Conservation of geckos
From 2002-2005, I investigated the impact of the competitive house gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus, which had been implicated in the decline of the endemic day gecko, Phelsuma ornata, and localised extinctions of endemic night geckos, Nactus spp., in Mauritius, Indian Ocean.
During my research I compared patterns of niche utilisation and interaction between these species to determine the competitive mechanisms potentially responsible for present gecko abundances and distributions throughout the Mauritian islands.
ornata was two-fold: (i) increased intraspecific aggression through environment- and H.

Four species are now restricted to Round Island, Guenther’s gecko (phelsuma guentheri), Telfair’s skink (Leiolopisma telfairi), the keel scale boa (Casarea dussumeri) and the burrowing boa (Bolyeria multocarinata).
Two further species; Bojer’s skink (Gongylomorphus bojeri) and the night gecko (Nactus serpensinsula) are only found on some of the small islands off Mauritius and the night gecko is the distinctive endemic Round Island race durrelli (Arnold and Jones, 1995).
The ornate day gecko (phelsuma ornata) and the Bouton’s skink (Cryptoblepharus boutoni) are widespread on the islands around Mauritius and on mainland Mauritius.
