Sinfonia grew and flourished in the early teens under the leadership of Burrell, a man imbued with the spirit of Ossian Mills and determined to nurture the seeds that Mills had carefully planted in Sinfonia.
Sinfonia continued to flourish in the 1920s under the dynamic leadership of Wisconsin’s Peter W. Dykema, later of Columbia University, a man of great energies and foresight whose effect on American music education is felt to this day.
At the height of the characterization of Sinfonia as a “professional fraternity,” Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was passed, dictating that professional fraternities cannot legally restrict membership to a single sex.

Sunday afternoon, May 31, 1925, the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha was installed at the University of Arkansas.
Lutton told of the origin of Phi Mu Alpha in the New England Conservatory of Music in 1898, and of the many great musicians who were members of the fraternity.
Due to the lack of students in universities, the Alpha Omicron Chapter was forced to withdraw its charter.

Christened Alpha Sigma Nu, one of its primary objectives was to someday gain affiliation with a growing national music fraternity known as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
The next few years were not easy for the brothers of Alpha Sigma Nu, as they worked hard to establish an identity among the student body of Jacksonville State while trying to meet the high membership standards of the national fraternity.
On May 7, 1950, the brothers of Alpha Sigma Nu received their national charter, and the Epsilon Nu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was born.

 The History of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia
"Phi Mu Alpha began with an invitation to a "get-acquainted" reception, extended by the "Old Boys" to the "New Boys" of Boston's New England Conservatory early in the fall term of 1898.
A spontaneous discussion about forming a men's music club took place among some of the men who attended the reception and, there being considerable interest in the idea, a meeting was planned for the evening of October 6 to further explore the possibilities.
The minutes of the first meeting on October 6, 1898 describe the appointment of a "committee on rules and regulations," which was to prepare a set of bylaws for the new organization.

 The Dreamers of Phi Mu Alpha
The Dreamers of Phi Mu Alpha are a male a cappella group that was formed in 1989 by several brothers of the Alpha Zeta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, a national social music fraternity.
In the spring of 1989 the group, then directed by Kevin McMahon, sang their first gig at Baby's Burgers and Shakes, and thus began the Dreamers of Phi Mu Alpha.
