Phi Sigma Pi was founded at Central Missouri State University on February 14, 1916, by E.L. Hendricks, C.A. Phillips, and C.H. McClure.
The Missouri Beta Chapter of Phi Lambda Epsilon—a fraternity founded in 1892, with chapters located on normal and high school campuses— was organized in 1894 as the first fraternity on the Warrensburg campus.
Membership in Phi Sigma Pi is open to those with a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average and one semester or one quarter of coursework completed at the college/university level.

Today the name refers to both an all-male fraternity that was founded in 1832 by Samuel Eells at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York and a "society" that broke off from the fraternity in 1992 which permits co-educated chapters.
Alpha Delta Phi was a charter member of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (formerly known as the National Interfraternity Council) (NIC), and a member of Alpha Delta Phi, Hamilton W. Mabie (Williams College, class of 1867), was the first President of the NIC.
The Fraternity is a retronym used now to distinguish the all-male Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity (aka the Alpha Delta Phi International) from the co-ed Alpha Delta Phi Society.
