  Phife Dawg
For Phife Dawg, a seasoned veteran with an impeccable hip-hop pedigree, there was only the road less traveled.
Phife flips it on "Lemme Find Out" and "4 Horseman" powered by a Jay-Dee depth-charge bass drop, then smoothes things out with "Beats, Rhymes and Phife" and "Melody Adonis." Getting used to Phife the soloist may not be easy, but this poignant, confident album demonstrates that he is for real.
Phife keeps it true by assailing hip-hop with an invigorating voice, giving the artform a much-needed gut-check in the process.

Since then, Phife Dawg and his Queens, N.Y., pals Q-Tip and DJ Ali helped to establish an era of laid-back, free-thinking, positive hip-hop, and paved the way for anti-gangsta artists such as Mos Def, Common and Jurassic 5.
By that point, anyone left doubting Phife Dawg's abilities or claiming that he was just Q-Tip's sidekick were left with more than a little egg on the face.
Dawg's Aug. 10 show at Sapphire precedes the Sept. 26 release date for his debut, "Ventilation," songs from which he'll be trying out on the crowd, even before the first single and video, "Flawless," goes into circulation.

You could give Phife Dawg a buzz on the weekend, but don't expect to hear from him until the dust on the football field has settled and all the scores are in.
To compound matters, says Phife, Jive Records, who had once displayed the foresight to break in some of the most original hip hop artists of the '80s and '90s, was on the verge of cashing in on the vacuous but hella-lucrative pre-teen market with Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.
These days, Phife forges ahead as a solo artist (although he is joined on stage by Jarobi and DJ Rasta Roots during live shows) and waits for his long-awaited come-uppance, while other rappers make mad dollars and get airplay by uttering inane catchphrases and brazenly ripping off beats from their peers.

After A Tribe Called Quest culminated a decade of influence with The Love Movement, the group's loyalists immediately shifted gears, turning their attention to frontman Q-Tip's solo debut, Amplified, and delegating the group's oft-neglected member, Phife Dawg, back into a role he has become very accustomed to: second fiddle.
Phife sparks the most immediate chemistry with Hi-Tek on "D.R.U.G.S." and "Alphabet Soup," as his unassuming voice flourishes over the producer's minimal grooves.
What Phife's solo debut lacks in execution, though, is compensated with intrigue.
