Anderton said: "By going to the back benches, as it were, there is less chance of clubs continuing down the route they are being taken and instead acting decisively to take action to correct the mis-information.
Anderton was due to outline his plans further later today at a hastily arranged media conference in an Edinburgh hotel but from the moment he reported to Murrayfield today that his position was becoming untenable.

His nickname is "Firework Phil" because he has provided lavish firework displays and entertainment before rugby games at Murrayfield, the home of the Scottish Rugby Union.
These were criticised by Sir Clive Woodward as a distraction from international games with England, and by Matt Dawson as a waste of the SRU's money after the Calcutta Cup game in Edinburgh in 2004, but Anderton is unrepentant on both counts.
