From: Phil Cohen [pcohen3@mindspring.com] Sent: Sunday, January 30, 2000 7:41 AM To: albrecht@teco.uni-karlsruhe.de; Phil Cohen Subject: Re: Situated Interaction in Ubiquitous Computing POSITION PAPER Phil Cohen, David McGee, and Sharon Oviatt Center for Human-Computer Communication Oregon Graduate Institute This workshop presupposes that the device itself is aware of its location and situation of use.
In the case of our handheld multimodal QuickSet system at OGI (Cohen et al., 1997), we have demonstrated that such mutual disambiguation of modalities (here, speech and pen-based gesture) can enable robust performance in the face of noisy environments, and in response to foreign accents (Oviatt, 1999).
In such environments, multimodal systems will be able to provide both alternative modalities, as well as modalities that when used in combination can overcome the weaknesses of one with the strengths of another.

Soul Shine Magazine : Leonard Cohen : The Seeker
Today, Leonard Cohen is at work on songs for his next album for a possible mid-2006 release as well as co-writing with singer Anjani Thomas for her upcoming album "Blue Alert," also to be issued this year.
Leonard was soon swept into a circle of folk musicians hanging out at the Chelsea Hotel including Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, Tim Buckley, and Buffy Sainte-Marie.
Leonard has written of love: random love and hate; slaves and masters; saints seduced by the evil and sordidness of lechery; as well as war, slaughter and the harsh light of the existential furnace.

Leonard Cohen: Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979: Pitchfork Review
A collaboration with the reclusive Phil Spector, 1977's Death of a Ladies' Man had the potential to be the defibrillator for Cohen's career, but Spector's suffocating Wall of Sound rendered the project a failure; even die-hard fans, of which Cohen had many, found the album disconcerting.
Leonard Cohen, the established poet, chose exactly the right time to descend from Canada, guitar in tow, and steal the hearts of America's English Lit.
Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979, was compiled from three consecutive December shows at London's Hammersmith Odean, and another show a week later at the Dome Theatre in Brighton, England.

Cohen and FAIR claimed that the establishment media was not liberal but conservative, citing as evidence the relatively scant coverage and interviews the media gave to radicals.
Cohen and FAIR, by loudly declaring the dominant media to be "conservative," also gave the media a license to remain liberal and to move even farther left - to continue its liberal bias while adding coverage of the views of radicals such as Chomsky.

Leonard Cohen: The Essential Leonard Cohen - PopMatters Music Review
The rest of the album is a constant parade of classics, from nearly all of Cohen's other albums (with the exception of 1973's Live Songs and the disastrous, Phil Spector-produced Death of a Ladies' Man, from 1977).
Cohen's version, however, is gorgeous, as he sings in that completely unpretentious young voice of his, sparsely accompanied by a quiet acoustic guitar, some very subtle strings, and his siren-like background singers (a device Cohen would employ, with great effect, for his entire career).
Cohen describes America as "the cradle of the best and worst" on "Democracy", an acid-tongued satire of Americana in all its worst elements, and on the powerful "Waiting for the Miracle", he depicts a culture desperate for enlightenment.

Leonard Cohen / Death of a Ladies' Man / Columbia (1977)
Cohen's lyrics do follow a similar thread, and the death in the album's title is really the death of all ladies' men, an empathetic goodbye to those seventies swingers (including Cohen himself) who are and who will be left stranded by the effects of aging, changing gender roles and an upheaval in society's mores.

Among my favourites songs on this album are "The Window" - a beautiful song in the tradition of "Last Year's Man"; "Un Canadien Errant", sung entirely in French by the Montreal born Cohen; "The Guests", "The Gypsy's Wife", and "Ballad of the Absent Mare".
Songs like The Window, The Traitor, and The Smokey Life, are excellent, seemingly highly-confessional songs that fit nicely into Cohen's repetoire.
After his ridiculous collaboration with Phil Spector - "Death of A Ladies Man" -, "Recent Songs" was a wonderfully welcome return to form.
