Esposito, a big, rangy center who had played parts of four seasons with the Blackhawks, was coming off his most productive year (21 goals, 40 assists, 61 points) in 1966-67, but Chicago management was unhappy he had failed to put up a point in six playoff games.
Esposito began his habit of anchoring himself in the slot, and he'd remain there -- despite opponents' attempts to move him -- for as long as it took one of his wings to get the puck out of the corner.
Esposito was also a clever stickhandler and passer, and helped run a power play that included Stanfield and Orr on the points, with Hodge and John Bucyk on the wings.

Phil's hockey career began with the St Catherines Teepees of the OHA in 1961-62 where in 49 games he notched 32 goals and 39 assists for 71 points, not a bad year.
However Phil could not produce to the same level and after 27 games he had only scored 3 goals for a total of 5 points, so he was shipped back to the Braves for the rest of the season, where in just 43 games he scored 26 goals for an 80 point total.
Phil's career was winding down and until his retirement in 1980-81 he still managed to lead the Rangers in scoring 4 years in a row, and help them reach the Stanley Cup finals in 1979.

It was a classic Espo moment (and may have had something to do with his being traded to the Bruins): the big centre from the Soo who became one of hockey’s all-time leading scorers, has never been reluctant to speak his mind.
He saw it all: the booze, the drugs, the women, the wheeling and dealing, the good times and the camaraderie, the bad times and the back-stabbing.
In telling what it was really like, Esposito takes readers into the boardrooms, back rooms (and even the bedrooms) of the men who make their lives in the NHL.
