Phil Knight is the lead guitarist and synth player, who eschews extended guitar solos for more emphasis on heavy and melodic riffs.
As the band matured, they began to take in influences from more distinctly New Zealand (NZ) acts such as the Skeptics and Bailterspace (and other music on the iconic NZ record label Flying Nun).
Here their NZ influences were more apparent - the opening line to 'You Again' mimicked the ballad 'I Hope I Never' by renowned NZ band Split Enz - but the sound had at the same time become more melodic and more distinctly Shihad's own.

It sickens me that Shihad are so widely 'known' to be NZ's 'top rock band' - there are so many NZ bands that are extremely better than them, in so many ways.
But these bands will never get any real recognition, because NZ's music economy is utter crap, and the NZ-based recording companies are so narrow-minded that they will not try anything new unless it has been proven to be popular overseas...
But I'd like to see NZ as a whole, take on the music industry and make it into something a hell of a lot better than it currently is. If not for my generation, at least for those to come.
