Phil Redmond, the creator of Brookside and Hollyoaks, has denied reports he is to step down as the head of his company, Mersey Television.
Redmond, who is selling some of his shareholding to outside investors, says that the company is expanding and standing down is the last thing on his mind.
Redmond did not divulge how much outside investment - from venture capital firm LDC - is being brought in, but that the extra money would be channelled into more programmes.

Phil, who saw his beloved Brookside launched on November 2, 1982 - the same day as Channel 4 - was told just yesterday of the bombshell decision to drop the soap from its three-times-a-week slots.
Phil, clearly annoyed and frustrated by the decision at C4, says he is bewildered that TV bosses are moving it at a time when there has never been so much financial and creative investment in the soap.
Phil, who in the past was drafted in to help revive the fortunes of Emmerdale when it suffered falling ratings, added: "When I went to help save Emmerdale they didn't spend anywhere near that amount of money.

 Redmond, Phil
Phil Redmond is the most well-known drama producer in Britain, and his name is familiar in most households as the creator of the long-running children's school drama, Grange Hill, and the soap opera, Brookside.
The development of Redmond's soap opera is of considerable importance to the history of the British television institution.
Redmond's success as a producer necessarily stems as much from his shrewd business instincts as his ability to generate creative ideas.

Conceived by Phil Redmond, who also devised Grange Hill, the soap was set to become Britain's gritty soap, with other compelling and challenging story lines.
With the sale of Mersey Television it is rumoured that Phil Redmond has now moved onto pastures new, if this is the case then it is unlikely we will see any further Brookside projects.
Many thought this idea couldn't work due to the limited storyline possibilities, many critics claimed that this would be a pointless project and Phil Redmond was just clinging on to Brookside.

 Television Heaven
Grange Hill began life in 1975 when ATV comedy writer Phil Redmond, who had just finished contributing scripts for season three of the children's sitcom The Kids from 47A, approached the various Independent Television companies with an idea for a series set in a modern comprehensive school.
Redmond tried unsuccessfully for a year to get anyone interested, then in 1976 he met BBC Children's Drama executive Anna Home who allegedly had been carrying round a folder of rejected storylines in a file marked "School".
Phil Redmond devised another soap opera, the Liverpool based Brookside, while in his absence his ongoing story of school life attracted many notable writers including Oscar winner Anthony Minghella, who was the series script-editor from 1983 - 88.

 'Brookside'
As a former quantity surveyor, Redmond knew that it would be cheaper to buy an entire cul-de-sac of new houses for use in all the recording (plus "extras" for office space, etc.), than paying six months of backlot and studio set costs.
Coupled with Redmond's policy of hiring relatively unknown actors (early bit part players Margi Clarke and Letitia Dean would go on to greater things), it would also mean an unparalleled sense of reality, with the buildings "aging" in real time.
Redmond wanted to deal with important issues realistically, and it is largely Brookside's treatment of such issues which has courted controversy, soeven before its first anniversary the series had dealt with attempted rape, politics, and race in a manner worthy of Play for Today.
