  Philadelphia Liberty Medal awarded to Colin Powell
PHILADELPHIA -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell was awarded the 2002 Philadelphia Liberty Medal yesterday for his leadership in the war on terrorism, his efforts in the Middle East and his concern for human rights.
Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street called Powell "a warrior for peace, a warrior for justice," and said his leadership after the Sept. 11 attacks has made "a profound difference" in the lives of all Americans.
The Liberty Medal was established in 1988 to honor individuals or organizations whose actions represent the founding principles of the United States.

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan used the 225th birthday of the United States on Wednesday to equate the global fight against AIDS with the struggle for liberties enshrined in the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
Annan, who received the Philadelphia Liberty Medal during a Fourth of July ceremony, said the world would face an unprecedented catastrophe unless nations moved quickly to thwart the AIDS pandemic that has already infected 36 million people and orphaned 30 million children.
Annan was awarded the Liberty Medal and its $100,000 cash prize for his work to promote political freedoms around the globe, including the "unalienable rights" to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness contained in the Declaration of Independence.

In the early evening the Secretary-General met with a delegation from the Ga-Adangbe Association of Philadelphia, whose members are nationals of Ghana.  They discussed the AIDS crisis in Africa and how this group of professionals could help in the fight against the epidemic.
In his acceptance speech, the Secretary-General said that "the bonds between the United States and the United Nations are strong and rooted in a common vision of freedom and opportunity for all men and women, regardless of frontiers" (see Press Release SG/SM/7877).
At the ensuing Liberty Medal press conference, he answered many questions on the proposed Global AIDS and Health Fund and said that with a recent $200 million pledge from Japan, the Fund already had some $900 million.

It was absolutely beautiful in Philadelphia yesterday and far from crowded in the city in the morning.
Philadelphia’s Afghan community was well-represented, and the one photo that I truly wish I’d been able to get was of an elderly Afghan man wearing traditional clothing and carrying one of the American flags that were given free to the crowd.
This historic and remarkable document…was based on basic, yet fundamental, beliefs of the founding fathers of America…that “God intended Man to be free!” That “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…”were inalienable rights, granted by God to all men…rights that must not be taken away.

The former U.S. senator made the statement after he received the $100,000 Philadelphia Liberty Medal, given by civic and business leaders, and awarded for the past 10 years on Independence Day to those who show leadership in the pursuit of liberty.
Mitchell oversaw 22 months of peace negotiations, which led to a peace accord that was agreed by participating parties in April, and then endorsed in two separate votes both north and south of the Irish border in May.
