 Editorial: Money rules / Pennsylvania needs to cap campaign donations
An analysis by The Philadelphia Inquirer showed that at least 53 individuals and organizations gave at least $100,000 to the former Philadelphia mayor in his successful campaign, including $700,000 from the Philadelphia law firm Ballard, Spahr, Andrews and Ingersoll and its individual members and $528,000 from the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
Federal campaign finance reforms come and go, while Pennsylvania remains in the dark ages on sensible contribution limits.
Democrat Ed Rendell, for instance, received more $100,000 campaign contributions than all but two people who ran for office in the United States in 2002.

The grant required the orchestra to raise $10 million from its board and $10 million from the public for its endowment campaign by August 31.
The Philadelphia Orchestra has met a $10 million challenge grant issued by the Neubauer Family Foundation earlier this year, the orchestra announced.
When the campaign began, the orchestra's endowment was $75 million, far less than the reserves of comparable orchestras in New York, Boston, and Cleveland.

Edgar Ray Killen, 80, is on trial in Neshoba County Circuit Court for the 1964 killings of Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner and James Chaney, who were registering voters in Mississippi during the "Freedom Summer" campaign.
State Attorney General James Hood gave the opening statement for the prosecution, telling jurors that Killen, a part-time Baptist preacher, was the person who instigated and planned the Ku Klux Klan attack on the three men.
