Philadelphia soul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philadelphia (or Philly) soul, sometimes called the Philadelphia Sound, is a style of soul music characterized by lush instrumental arrangements often featuring sweeping strings and horns.
Philly soul songwriters and producers, including Thom Bell, Linda Creed, and teams of Gene McFadden and John Whitehead, and Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff (the latter pair of Philadelphia International Records) worked with a stable of studio musicians to develop the unique Philly sound used as backing for many different singing acts.
Philly soul was popular throughout the 1970s and it set the stage for the studio constructions of disco and urban contemporary music that emerged later in the decade.

Soul music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soul music is a combination of rhythm and blues and gospel which began in the late 1950s in the United States.
Soul music is differentiated by its use of gospel-music devices, its greater emphasis on vocalists, and its merging of religious and secular themes.
With the introduction of influences from electro music and funk, soul music became less raw and more slickly produced, resulting in a genre of music that was once again called RandB (although the term is no longer an acronym), ususally disinguished from the earlier rhythm and blues by identifying it as "contemporary RandB".

 Philly Soul
Philly soul was one of the most popular forms of soul music in the early '70s.
As a result, it was much smoother -- even slicker -- than the deep soul of the late '60s, but the vocals remained as soulful as any previous form of R&B. Philly soul was primary a producer's medium, as Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff and Thom Bell (not to forget Vince Montana Jr.
That isn't to short change the vocalists, since the Spinners, the O'Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and the Stylistics were among fine soul singers with distinctive voices, but the sonic elements that made Philly Soul distinctive were the creation of the producers.
