Philco, the Philadelphia Storage Battery company (formerly known as the Spencer Company and later the Helios Electric Company), was a pioneer in early radio and television and former employer of Philo Farnsworth, inventor of cathode ray tube television.
The Aerospace portion of Philco Ford was renamed Ford Aerospace in 1976.
In Brazil, Philco was acquired in 1994 by Itautec, becoming Itautec-Philco and in August 2005 Itautec sold Philco to Gradiente.

Philco was formed in 1892 as the Helios Electric Co. It mostly manufactured batteries and power supplies, becoming the Philadelphia Battery Storage Co. in 1906.
Philco's popular Baby Grand line of radios were among the ornate "cathedral" or "bee-hive" wooden radios that the reader may have admired in old or nostalgic movies.
Philco's design department, already widely known for its innovative radio and phonograph designs, decided to try and stimulate its TV sales by revolutionizing the styling of the Philco televisions away from the traditional square or rectangular shapes that had become the norm by the mid-fifties.

In the 1950's Philco was facing hard times and came up with the concept of Predicta televisions that featured a tilt and swivel CRT.
Philco introduced the tabletop Princess model above in 1959 and had another model called the Penthouse with the CRT on a 25 foot cord.

The Philco Television Playhouse was one of the most distinguished of the many "live" anthology dramas which aired during the so-called "golden age" of television.
The first episode of the Philco program was broadcast over NBC on Sunday evening 3 October 1948 between 9:00 and 10:00 P.M. It remained on the air for just over seven seasons until 1955.

When I joined Philco in late 1957, their "computer lab" was working on a navy contract to provide a transistorized mainframe designated the "CXPQ".
After Ford bought Philco, and while the prototype 212s were being debugged, the computer division was put into the hands of Dean Wanlass, formerly, I believe, of Packard-Bell.

The "Apple" television receiver was an attempt at making a color CRT using color stripes instead of the normal color triad used in the contemporary CRT's.
Philco worked on this project for 10 years before throwing in the towel due mainly to the cost ($15M) to tool up for production.
This information was acquired from a retired Philco engineer who worked on the project during the early 50's.
