Review of Robin Evans, The Projective Cast   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
First expounded by Philibert Delorme in his Premier tome de l'architecture of 1567, and then developed by the great mathematician-architects of the 17th century, especially Derand and Guarini, stereotomy is the art of geometrically precise stonecutting.
Delorme's most difficult trompe was built at Anet to support a little cylindrical room that was meant to serve as the king's study.
It was demolished in the 19th century, and the woodcut that Delorme used to show it is clumsy and misleading.

The hidden proportions in the trait of the trompe of Anet
One of the first writers in this field was Philibert Delorme [3], who shows, amongst other things, the modality of the definition of the trait [4] relative to the trompe of Anet [5] (figures 1-5).
Another piece of evidence comes from Delorme himself: in one piece of his study he states that the length of the maximum ashlar is 10/12 feet.
This voute suspendue en l’air, as Delorme himself calls it, was built to support stairs or small cabinets as in the case of the trompe of Anet without the necessity of resting on the floor; perhaps though, it was to give the whole structure a characteristic element.
