  Philibert II, Duke of Savoy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1496, Philibert's father surprisingly succeeded as Duke, when his underaged great-grandnephew Duke Charles II of Savoy died, being the male heir of the line of Savoy.
She was daughter of Duke Charles I of Savoy, the Warrior, and Blanche of Montferrat, as well as granddaughter of Philibert's late uncle, Duke Amedeo IX of Savoy.
During Philibert's reign, his neighbor Charles VIII of France died, and the next king, Louis XII of France, invaded Italy, where he conquered most of the Kingdom of Naples.

Emmanuel Philibert's mother Beatrice of Portugal (1504-1538) was sister-in-law to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and the future duke served in Charles's army during the war against Francis I of France, distinguishing himself by capturing Hesdin in July 1553.
By the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis between France and Spain, (1559) the duchy was restored to Emmanuel Philibert and he married Margaret of France, Duchess of Berry (1523-1574), sister to King Henry II.

Charles I (1468–1490), surnamed the Warrior, was the Duke of Savoy from 1482 to 1490 and titular king of Cyprus, Jerusalem, and Armenia from 1485 to 1490.
When he was 17, his father's first cousin, the childless Queen Charlotte of Cyprus, his uncle's widow, whom her illegitimate half-brother had exiled from her inherited kingdom in the 1460s, surrendered her rights to young Charles, her next legitimate heir in line from King Janus of Cyprus.

Allied with the victorious Spanish at the battle of St. Quentin (1557), its legitimate heir, Duke Emmanuel Philibert (ruled 1559–80), recovered his state with the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559) and began to rebuild and strengthen it.
