		Muhammad Abd-al-Rahman Barker (born 1930) is a retired professor of Urdu and South Asian Studies who has written several fantasy novels under the pen name M.
		Born in Idaho as Philip Barker, he studied at University of Washington under Melville Jacobs.
		Barker has also written five novels set in the world of Tékumel: Man of Gold and Flamesong were published in the 1984 by Daw Books and were recently re-released by Zottola Publishing.

		When Dr. Barker was arrested in February 2000, I was encouraged that maybe society wasn't as superficial as I thought--that society wouldn't simply turn a blind eye when a person of high stature takes advantage of others.
		The Crown's February 2001 decision to drop Dr. Barker's assault charges, the April 2002 decision to drop his child-prostitution-related charges (following a pathetic request for mercy), as well as the recent decision to stay his drug-trafficking charge have led me to question whether double-standards really are at play.
		I believe the Crown is guilty of letting their emotions bar the hearing of the truth on this matter, and this shows tremendous disrespect to the young people whom Dr. Barker may have harmed.

		The news director for CBS's radio and TV affiliates in Dallas at the time of President Kennedy's November 22, 1963, assassination, Barker is widely credited with first reporting on the air that the president was dead, having received word through a doctor acquaintance directly from the hospital ER.
		The error is repeated in historical accounts often enough to annoy the now-retired Barker, though he says the falsehood was later acknowledged by Rather.
		Approached earlier by the same minister with what was a second-hand account, Barker himself had run the story by the school's principal and some teachers, all of whom denied it outright.
