Philip Farkas’s legendary career as a musician, teacher and author spans more than a half-century.
As a youngster, he discovered the horn seren-dipitously, as it proved to be a more compact alternative to the tuba, which would not fit through the door of the streetcar that took him to school.
Farkas left the Chicago Symphony in 1960 to begin a distinguished teaching career at the Indiana University, Bloomington.

The interviews and narrations are still very insightful as to how Farkas himself got started and why he loved to play and teach, but there wasn't much advice as far as actual horn playing goes.
Farkas performs 4 of Gallay's Unmeasured Preludes, which offer great insight as to his interpretation of some very difficult etudes.
This is a great companion to The Art of Horn Playing written by Farkas in his middle years and the biography by Nancy Jordan Fako "Philip Farkas, a happy worthwhile life".

Always a collector, Farkas left behind voluminous correspondence, well-organized scrapbooks, photographs, date books, and other memorabilia through which Fako was able to reconstruct a highly accurate account of his entire life.
Many know of his great love for flying, but one learns here that as a young teen Farkas was a prize winner in a national model airplane design competition.
Randy was a Farkas student at Indiana University, played second horn in the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1975-1997, and is now professor of horn at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Upon graduation in 1958, he joined the Indianapolis Symphony as assistant principal horn and the following season moved to third horn of that ensemble where he performed until 1961 when he was appointed principal horn of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, a position he would hold for the next 23 years.
Hatfield also served as Adjunct Professor and Chair of the Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Division at the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati and was a member of the Cincinnati Woodwind Quintet with his principal colleagues from the Cincinnati Symphony.
Summers also led him to return to Aspen where he played second horn to Philip Farkas in the Aspen Festival Orchestra from 1960 - 68 and in 1972, he became co principal of that orchestra and joined the faculty of the Festival, positions he would hold until 1989.

Like Farkas said in The Art of French Horn Playing, make sure it's braided and not too strong or it'll wear a groove where it's tied.
I use Hoover vacuum cleaner belts, cut up, for neoprene valve bumpers, and they can be found in practically any good grocery store.

Described once by the late Philip Farkas as having "a wonderful singing legato matched with excellent and fluent technique," Timothy McAllister began his musical studies at age eleven and, soon after, made his first orchestral appearance at the age of sixteen (performing Glazunov's Concerto in Eb).
Awards that soon followed included First Prize in the 1990 Pulaski-Rauch Young Musicians' Competition, First Prize in the 1993 North American Saxophone Alliance Young Artist Competition, winner of the University of Michigan Concerto Competition, and winner of the Earl V. Moore Award in Music from the University of Michigan.
