Martin plays Gottschalk with debonair, suave savoir faire, even when, as in Le chant du martyr, the music is clearly maudlin, a poor man’s Liebestraum with a melodrama in B-flat Minor.

 Gottschalk: The First Gershwin
Louis Moreau Gottschalk was sent to study in Paris at the age of 14, and his debut there, in 1845, was attended by some of the most famous composers of the era.
Chopin praised Gottschalk as a future "king of pianists" and Berlioz welcomed him as a "consummate pianist with sovereign power." He was also a hit with the French public, who were as crazy about his compositions as they were his piano playing.
